Amazingly Awful!
The leading man is a Frank Zappa lookalike with only a fraction of the talent Zappa (being dead) has. However, the real star of the film, Torgo (a goat-man), performed in some of the best walking-from-one-end-of-the-set-to-another scenes I have seen since 1950s Corman films.
Finally, the fights (or are they orgies?) between Manos’ wives, which we are asked to believe to be deadly, are utterly hilarious.
The MST3K version of this incredibly dreadful bit of late 60s trashola is one of Joel and the Bots’ best, but even their antics fail to make this movie wholly tolerable.
Rated: For Insomniacs Only.
I was warned but I watched anyway
Lost in the desert, a couple, their young daughter and doomed poodle Peppy take shelter in a mysterious house that is watched over by Torgo (John Reynolds), a deformed (and possibly satyric) handyman who ominously (and frequently) refers to the “Master”. Soon the malignant master (Tom Neyman), with his evil hell-hound, manifests, intending to add the terrified family to his cult of murderous followers (or something to that effect). The femto-budgeted, near-amateur production dominates the top of the bottom of the charts of ‘bad movies’ as it massages incompetent direction, inept filming and editing, an incoherent plot, insipid acting, soporific pacing, and cretinous script into a preposterous film known only for its awfulness. Lacking the goofy charm of typical ‘bad movies’, ‘Manos’ is watchable only as a curiosity or a ‘how-not-to’ instructional video for aspiring film-makers and, like most of its bottom-of-the-barrel ilk, a lot has been written about the film’s provenance, myriad continuity errors, and production flaws. The movie’s only redeeming factors are The Master’s striking red and black hand-themed cape, shambling minion Torgo’s intriguing walking stick, and the ultimate dark fate of the innocent family (in other circumstances, the final scene could have been genuinely creepy).
