A Loving Tribute to William Castle From Joe Dante
Aging movie producer Lawrence Woolsey (John Goodman) screens his latest schlock-licious B-movie — filled with atomic blasts and human mutation — and gets the attention of teen horror-flick buff Gene Loomis (Simon Fenton), all while the Cuban Missile Crisis intensifies. Joe Dante directs this tale based in Key West, Florida, in 1962.

Cathy Moriarty and Kellie Martin (who looks a lot like Sarah Michelle Geller here) co-star. Also appearing are Dante regulars Kevin McCarthy, Belinda Balaski, Dick Miller, Robert Picardo, etc. A then-unknown Naomi Watts has a small role as a character in a film within the film about a man transformed into a shopping cart.

I love how the film exploits the ignorance of people in the atomic age, with their belief in such things as duck and cover. As Rita Kempley wrote, “In this funny, philosophical salute to B-movies and the B-moguls who made them, Dante looks back fondly on growing up with the apocalypse always on your mind and atomic mutants lurking under your bed”.

The jokes in the “Mant” film are so incredibly awesome and cheesy! But this seems to be the film’s sense of humor in general: fun, cheesy and playfully childish (in the best sense of the word). I loved the spoon trick of the man in the bathtub, leaning over and scrubbing himself. Hilarious!

I had actually not heard of this Joe Dante film until it was mentioned to me by Belinda Balaski herself in October 2010 during an interview. She said that “anyone who is a William Castle fan just loves this film because it has all the tricks from all the theaters he ever did.” She nailed it. As someone who loves William Castle, I absolutely adored the homage to his films and Goodman’s interpretation of the man himself.
