**Although the main character is adorable, the movie just doesn’t work the way it was intended.**

I can’t help but look at this movie with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I like the final result and I loved the main character and the overall concept of the script. On the other hand, I’m forced to consider that the film works poorly as a black comedy, doesn’t have any funny (and I’m a fan of black humor) and would have been more interesting if it had been thought of as a drama, with some romance and mystery mixed in.

The script starts from a good premise: a lovely young woman with old-fashioned tastes who seem totally innocent and above suspicion, but who, unbeknownst to anyone, is dedicated to cleaning the world of evildoers. The idea was good, but what the film does is turn it into something else. Miss Meadows is adorable, but she’s not someone bent on fighting crime. She doesn’t look for the bad guys, she simply crosses paths with them, and that’s not what a vigilante does. Of course, she ends up being wanted by the authorities, as she herself dates the local sheriff, but she remains not an avenger or someone decided on doing justice. She doesn’t act, she just reacts.

In addition to this issue, which for me is essential, there are other details that simply work very badly, starting with the extraordinary formality between the two boyfriends who, despite having a relationship, continue to call each other Miss and Sheriff, and never address each other by their first name, in a register as personal as the one that mother and daughter adopt over the phone. Furthermore, the film lacks tension and dramatic impact: various crimes and deaths occur, but there is no real tension at any point. Ultimately, this is where the most surreal and strange of this film lies: in the naturalness and lightness with which everything happens, and in the way that sheriff seems to want to simply ignore the bride’s behavior, which is worthy of a deep psychiatric analysis.

Katie Holmes is the star of this movie. She’s not an actress I particularly like, but I have to admit that she did a pretty good job here. She managed to endow the character with great charm and charisma, as well as having excellent dialogue and understated jokes, almost British in essence. James Badge Dale gives him very effective support, even though his character was very poorly thought out and written. Despite the actor’s work and effort, the sheriff is too dumb to be credible. Jean Smart, Ava Kolker, Callan Mulvey and Graham Beckel do what they’re allowed to do, but the movie isn’t theirs to shine.

Technically, the film bets a lot on the style and on the construction of an environment that oscillates between the old-fashioned suburban and the surrealist dystopian. Not everything works, but it wasn’t all a complete failure either. The success in choosing filming locations and creating scenarios is quite evident, as is the very happy and accurate way in which the entire outfit of the young Miss Meadows was conceived and created. The cinematography works very well in general, with bright colors, a certain lightness that looks good, and that is only cut in the flashback scenes, in more washed-out tones and in a more tense environment. Personally, I would have liked to see darker, denser cinematography in the parts of the film where the central character is more obsessive, sick and manic. The soundtrack also plays its role in a satisfactory way and without major surprises.

Great watch, would watch again, and can recommend.

This is great proof that Katie Holmes can not only lead and carry a movie, but has a wide range of acting skill.

This movie is all about character work, or you could say it is character driven. Meadows is an extremely complex character that is shown, but without explaining to the audience what they’re supposed to be looking for (a drain on movies that do this), some audiences might miss the nuance of the character as well as her psychosis.

The movie reminds me of a more mellow “Mr. Right”, or at least with more realistic values. And in this lies the problem, every bit of this movie could be true, and that tends to put in eight different categories that people don’t find entertaining, mostly because it’s too close to reality, and you normally watch movies to escape that.

The movie is metaphor, for the need to stand and defend what is right wherever we stand, and the a representation of the juxtaposition between violence and the social expectations for women.

A LOT of people are going to hate what this movie represents, but I feel that’s just representative how awful our society is.

This movie definitely fills a void in the industry, it’s masterful, well produced, but as good as the writing is, the content just isn’t going to be palatable for everyone.

Surprisingly low rating for such a nice film
I read a couple of negative reviews and I can only conclude that this is one of those times when people have simply different expectations (high or just different) and they are overall too surprised to enjoy the movie as it is. Some say Holmes plays too young character for her actual age, some say the film isn’t funny enough, when it should be a dark comedy and some complain the story is too predictable.

Main complaint however is that the storyline fails to develop enough to seem believable, and simply emerges to, quote, off-puttingly bizarre (review on holywoodreporter). I must disagree. This movie would not seem annoyingly odd, if you simply don’t watch it with certain expectations, and this actually counts for almost any movie. Forget for a minute you’re watching Tom Cruise’s ex wife, forget that she’s also a co-producer, and just let yourself enjoy the movie. Who says films should be “believable”?! You may treat this movie as a fairy tale and you’ll get overwhelmingly fascinated by the tap-dancing, the hairstyle and the costume design in it.

You also may be surprised you actually like Holmes’ acting. She plays a woman living in a fantasy world, who starts slowly meeting the reality – but who says she should meet the reality all the way through? She abandons her fairy-tale world for a while, just to fix the things that are too odd, but what’s nicely surprising is she doesn’t abandon it completely. I would say she plays some sort of an everyday super hero, because she fearlessly helps and saves people in need, but she’s is depicted without the clichés for a superhero character, and the film is weird enough, in a nice way, to make us think of this without putting it too obvious.

Another reason to watch this movie is Brenda Abbandandolo’s costume design. Miss Meadows’ clothes, combined with her hairstyles and maybe the makeup, are the things that make this movie so enjoyable. For any fashion lover, this is a reason alone to watch it. Scenography is also nice, but Katie Holmes in a elegant high waist skirt wearing white gloves and tap-dancing shoes, with cute hair strands and big eyes, this is something completely overwhelmingly cute and sure a reason to love at least a little the film. Her well-illustrated character will make you like the rest of the cast’s look – Sheriff’s intentionally balding hair, bad guy’s evil looking face and his character’s overall look – the hair and the dog on a leash.

At last, I suggest if you suspect that you have developed any kind of high expectations for this film, simply skip it. Watch it only without prejudice, and you will enjoy Katie Holmes acting, and Miss Meadows’ clothing and hairstyles.

Justice served with a spoonful of sugar
Prim’n’proper school teacher Miss Meadows (a delightful portrayal by the adorable Katie Holmes) also just happens to be a vigilante who’s dedicated to ridding the world of evildoers. Complications ensue after Miss Meadows falls in love with the sheriff (likeable James Badge Dale) of the small town that she’s recently moved into.

Writer/director Karen Leigh Hopkins relates the enjoyably offbeat story at a constant pace, maintains an utterly beguiling quirky tone, nicely evokes a pleasant small town atmosphere, presents a neat array of colorful characters, and spices things up with amusing touches of wickedly funny dark humor along with a few surprisingly poignant moments. With her white gloves and socks, pretty dresses, black tap shoes, impeccable sense of grace and decorum, and persistently perky demeanor, Holmes as Miss Meadows makes for a charmingly kooky anti-heroine. Moreover, there are sturdy supporting contributions from Jean Smart as Miss Meadws’ equally well-mannered mother, Mary Kay Place as cheery neighbor Mrs. Davenport, Ava Kolker as sweet little girl Heather, Callan Mulvey as skeezy ex-con Skylar, and Graham Beckel as creepy sexual predator Tony Weaver. Further enhanced by Jeff Cardoni’s bouncy score and Barry Markowitz’s bright cinematography, this film overall rates as a total idiosyncratic treat.
