They run into a TV news crew led by celebrity reporter Lia, who are after the same story, but when they discover that the entire country has been overrun by zombies, what are the chances of them getting the message across? Take it for what it is.
This is not Dawn of the Dead. It’s not Night of the Living Dead. It’s a low grade 70’s Italian zombie gore flick. The acting is not great, the story is shaky, the dubbing is bad, and the clips of animals are completely off of the story. But you have to take this movie for what it is. It’s got some good gore and is a fun movie if you’re into zombies. It’s not Shakespeare. It’s campy and schlocky and goofy, and if you’re looking for a true quality horror movie you should go elsewhere. But if you enjoy the Italian zombie genre, you’ll enjoy this one. Just don’t expect Oscar caliber.
Check those component ratios
For those of you who take films far too seriously, you’d probably want to reverse that ten to a one. For those of you out there who want pure cheese entertainment, then this film is for you.
Zombie Creeping Flesh stands out amongst other Italian movies like Andrea Bianchi’s Zombie Dead and Umberto Lenzi’s Nightmare City as THE most hilarious and ridiculous zombie movie made. Bruno isn’t out to comment on anything, he’s not sliding us a sly allegory on modern life, he’s simple churning out a gore movie for the green, and supplying us with ninety-five minutes of utter, utter madness.
The film starts off in some industrial complex called a Hope centre, where kooky scientists are ‘monitering the amplitudes’ and ‘checking those component ratios’ – before you know a zombie rat has started an epidemic and it’s up to our Swat team to do…something or other.
The Swat team endear themselves to the viewer by wasting a bunch of eco-terrorists and then setting off into the jungle for the Hope Centre, on their way picking up journalist Margit Newton (the only recognisable face here, and by that I mean recognisable to sad folks like me) and her buddy. Throughout their journey they’ll meet natives, try to seduce each other with chewing tobacco, dress up in leotards, and taunt the living dead.
Mattei (and Fragrasso, who wrote this and directed Troll 2!) pile on the daftness by the ton, from the cringe-inducing ‘witty’ dialogue to the constant insertion of stock footage, which threatens to overwhelm the film at certain points (starts off quite subtly, then reaches insane levels as the characters look off-screen to see a whole menagerie of animals from just about any country). The gore and body count are quite high, and who can hate a film that has a zombie granny with a cat inside her? I forgot to mention all the stolen soundtrack music too, or the zombie kid, or the random vomiting…the list goes on…
Endless fun from start to finish. The production values seem a bit higher than any other Mattei film I’ve seen, and he even manages to inject a bit of atmosphere now and again. A must see for fans of bad cinema. For further viewing, see Zombie Flesh Eaters 2, Mattei’s second attempt at a zombie film.
