Impressive in the most tender of forms.
Pieces of April on the surface appears to be an ordinary product, as you being to watch it and realize that the production company kept the budget as low as possible, which is obviously reflected in the cameras used in the film. A situation that often misleads the viewer into thinking that the finished film will be of subpar quality, which is hardly the case for Pieces of April. A film constructed so well, narratively speaking, but also handled in the simplest of manners. Built in a Thanksgiving setting, April (played remarkably well by Katie Holmes) is expecting her family for Thanksgiving in her new apartment, along with her new boyfriend. She has had a falling-out with her family, specially her mother, with whom they have never had a loving relationship due to April’s relentless rebelliousness which hasn’t ceased to the present day.

This time, April is putting extra effort so that for once they all can have a good time, and create a good memory together as a family. Her mother, Joy (an spectacular Patricia Clarkson, in an Academy Award nominated performance) is utterly cynical about April’s apparent attempts to bring the family together. Joy suffers from cancer, which is like adding salt to an already painfully wounded relationship. Judging by her somewhat discourteous predisposition, she is notably fed up with her family constantly checking her up every minute for the smallest of things.

So, the plot divides the story into two outlooks, the family: father (Oliver Platt), mother, sister (Allison Pill), brother (John Gallager Jr.) and grandmother (Alice Drummond) as they take the road to New York where April lives. And the other viewpoint is from April’s side, together with her boyfriend Bobby (Derek Luke) preparing and arranging everything for Thanksgiving’s dinner, but serious problems arise and she must solve them before her family gets there.

It’s a simple yet effective plot that ultimately delivers a gratifying, well-crafted film. It tackles estranged relationships without actually showing confrontations or agitated interactions, but by means of spoken words, dialogues, bad memories shared between the family in the car ride. The dynamics of the relationship between mother and daughter are perfectly explained, and their feelings are marvellously reflected by their excellent performances, which make it justly believable.

Pieces of April is a delightful surprise, ready to be revisited every fourth Thursday of November for many years to come.
