My two cents
This is a rehash of my comments on Gekijô-ban poketto monsutaa: Maboroshi no pokemon: Rugia bakutan. I think they are more appropriate here.

Many of those who claim to hate this movie openly admit to hating Pokemon to begin with. As I had said in my comments on “Pokemon The First Movie,” you have to go in to the movie with an open mind. If you go see “Pokemon 2000” because you were “dragged in” by your kids/nieces/nephews/others, you’ve already decided that you’re going to hate it. I’m not saying that you WILL hate it; just that you’ve DECIDED that you’re going to hate it no matter what, just because it’s Pokemon. Current Pokemon fans (like me, and I’m over 30!) or more open-minded moviegoers will probably like “Pokemon 2000.”

I was glad that Kids WB decided to go with a more “theatrical” score for “Pokemon 2000.” Although I would have preferred that more of the Japanese music would have been left in, I think that the orchestral music was more fitting than the bubblegum pop that permeated “Pokemon The Movie.”

Like most people, I liked “Pokemon 2000” more than “Pokemon The First Movie,” probably because of the overall brighter feel. I personally loved the first U.S. appearance of one of my favorite new Pokemon, the flowery Bellossom. There are points of the movie that I felt could have been expanded on, but overall, “Pokemon 2000” is a fun ride.

A Pokémon Retrospective, Part 2
In my ongoing quest to destroy my childhood I have set out to (re)watch all Pokémon films, and see how they hold up now that I am an adult. “Pokémon the Movie 2000” (1999) is commonly seen as worse than the first film. Surprising, as it improves on many of that film’s weaker points.

The writing is still spectacularly bad, of course. It would be hard to find a line that isn’t filled to the brim with awkward exposition. Nevertheless, the gap in quality with the Japanese version is smaller this time (not because the English writing is better, but the Japanese writing has gotten even worse), so perhaps it is not the translators’ fault.

Fortunately, the story itself is not that bad. The first film started with nearly 30 minutes of foreplay, whereas this one takes 5, and those are actually important to the plot. Then our heroes enter the frame, on what seems the be the boat from “Jaws,” closely followed by Team Rocket in a pedal-powered submarine. Infantile as it may be, I must admit that their talent for always choosing the least plausible plan possible keeps cracking me up. Meowth even has a pun (about 30 minutes in) that made me laugh out loud, something that doesn’t happen often.

After some pleasantries, the plot kicks in. It is hard to imagine how the writers could have cut themselves deeper in the fingers than by playing the ‘chosen one’ card. Apparently only Ash will be able to stop a ruthless collector from disturbing the planet’s (!) balance by catching legendary Pokémon in his own Laputa (not the last, and not the most shameless time these films rip off “Castle in the Sky”). A more tiresome cliché to build the plot around is hardly imaginable.

However, the adventure that ensues is quite enjoyable. The pacing is good, certainly compared to the first film with its first 30 minutes of nothing and closing 30 minutes of fighting. This would actually be a pretty decent adventure film if it had a marginally less awful script.

Again, the creators succeed splendidly in building atmosphere. A storm raging over the sea, and the suggestion of what lurks beneath the surface is thrilling. Or an island festival on one of those warmly lit summer nights I’m such a sucker for. Espcially compared to the later Pokémon films, these earlier endeavours have something personal to them. Something that may even be called ‘artistic,’ relatively speaking at least.

The animation is still quite fine too – except when using CGI, but then again, that even goes for “Spirited Away.” A scene in which the protagonists have to steer a ship through the rocks during a storm is particularly well-done, and 360-degree camera turn (hand-drawn perspective!) is even impressive.

The voice-acting remains sub-par, although it has improved somewhat. The antagonist is played by one Neil Stewart, who may not boast an impressive resumé but has a voice reminiscent of Tony Jay (Frollo in Disney’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”) that sounds respectably menacing. The Japanese version is of course superior, even stunt-casting Kôichi Yamadera (Spike Spiegel from “Cowboy Bebop”) as Lugia, but the difference is still small enough to justify watching the dub.

In spite of many enjoyable moments, the film’s ending leaves an unpleasant aftertaste. Once again the writers have come up with a moral that is simply inexplicable. This one even builds on the first film, which taught that making Pokémon fight is bad. Now we can conclude that *catching* Pokémon is bad too. Over 1,000 episodes and eight generations of video games beg to differ.

But the film that precedes is not too bad. It remains a given that the writing will be absolutely atrocious, and it remains sticking out like a sore thumb, but unlike the first film, the end product here is actually entertaining. It has good animation and atmosphere, and improved storytelling. Although the film remains solely recommendable to people who already are fans, it probably stands among Pokémon’s better cinematic ventures.
