However, Oak reveals that he has one more Pokémon, an Electric-type named Pikachu. Despite its volatile and feisty personality, as well as its refusal to get inside a Poké Ball, Ash happily takes Pikachu for his journey.

Alternate version of first season of the Pokémon series
Plot of the film is basically alternate version of the first season of the series. It has many same scenes but has changed the plot to build around the Ho-Oh encounter, which happened in series but in series that didn’t affect Ash’s journey. Many of the later scenes are still same ones from series, but just in different places since Ash is traveling with different goal and direction. His travelmates aren’t Misty and Brock but instead Verity and Sorrel who are basically same characters but with different names and look. Bad as a movie but if you want to watch how it all started. I think it’s better to watch this instead of season 1 of the series. If you are not looking for nostalgia, there are better movies.

This film was widely anticipated because it was made in celebration of the franchise’s massive 20th anniversary! I recently found out that “Pokémon” has gathered $59 billion in revenue and is the most valuable franchise ever created! This film actually takes place in an alternate timeline. About half of it does in fact retell a lot of the first season, but then it mostly changes. It seems a lot like an original story with Ash and Pikachu. It’s mostly about Ash finding a feather of Ho-oh and looking for it.

Sadly, Brock and Misty from the original series only appear very briefly at the end. as Ash has two other companions here. Team Rocket have only a few minutes of screen time and don’t even meet up with Ash! The thing most people remember about this movie is that there’s a brief scene where after twenty years Pikachu finally talks! It says, “It’s because…it’s because I always want to be with you”. It’s never explained if this is just taking place in Ash’s imagination or really happening. The animation is among the best that the series has ever created. ***
