“Everything that I know about science, about the make-up of the human body, what happened in that classroom defied everything”…….

Released in 1995, “Powder” was not a very well-known film for its time but anyone who saw it or has seen it on cable since would tell you how powerful, emotional and how human it is. Sean Patrick Flannery stars as Jeremy Reed, nicknamed “Powder” because his Albino skin is as white as powder. When he was born, his mother was struck by lightning and died. His father was repulsed by his appearance and abandoned him. He grew up in the basement of his grandparents, isolated from the rest of the world and learned about the outside world of human civilization through books. When his grandparents pass away, Jeremy is taken by a social worker (Mary Steenburgen) to a small rural town in the Mid-West where he struggles to fit in and acquire the acceptance of a community that finds him bizarre and intimidating, especially after he begins to display his electrical powers. The lightning that struck his mother has made him an entity of pure energy, and his body is highly sensitive to electricity (lights, television). During one memorable scene, his science teacher Mr. Donald Ripley (played by Jeff Goldblum) is conducting a lecture and demonstration’s on the Jakob’s Ladder effect. The electrical conductor shoots a wave of energy toward Powder and levitates him. He has the power to turn lights off and on at will, he can levitate small items like spoons (telekenesis) and more importantly, he has a big heart and brain. He has an extremely high I.Q. and is even offered to be sent to a magnet school for geniuses located in a distant location. Taking it to mean the town doesn’t want him there, he refuses. Other schoolmates, especially other males, bully him and humiliate him. The police and other members of the small town fear him and find his presence disturbing. But Powder has a compassionate and loving nature and is portrayed as a sort of Jesus Christ figure. On a hunting trip, his powers enable the hunter to experience the pain and death of the hunted prey, a deer. Powder represents the outsiders, the misunderstood. It is a human E.T. story without the alien. He could not live in this world and through his death becomes energy. He is ultimately an example of the “pure energy” some scientists theorize humans will evolve into. Director Victor Salva brilliantly engages us in a film that is powerful, dramatic and achingly human. The visual effects, tame by today’s standards, nevertheless add to the spirituality of the film’s nature. Strong performances by Sean Patrick Flannery in the title role, fully encompassing the innocence and deeply human nature of Powder who wanted only to be accepted by others, despite his being highly evolved. Anyone who has ever felt socially different and ostracized will completely relate to Powder, especially in today’s youth culture which is uniformist and refuses to accept individuality and uniqueness. Jeff Goldblum is in his element as the Professor. He’s intelligent, witty, charismatic and sadly an underrated actor. He was doing “Independence Day” at the same time as this film and this proves how versatile an actor he is. Mary Steenburgen is likewise in her element in the role of the kind social worker Jessica Caldwell, providing her role with motherly, mature touches. The film is mostly tragic and bittersweet, but such things are what most great art is made of. Its powerful message of love and longing for love is at the core of this wonderful film. “Powder” is definitely one of the great underrated movies of the 90’s.
