**A lukewarm and unmemorable resurrection for a horror monster who spent too much time asleep.**

It’s been many years since _Pumpkinhead 2_, a movie that virtually ruined any prospects for short-term continuity, with a frankly weak story. The introduction of new technical resources, such as CGI and others, allowed this to be rethought and eventually led to the production of this film, which largely ignores its immediate predecessor and seems to be trying to be a continuation of the initial film, from 1988.

The film takes place in a rural American area where the Pumpkinhead is a legendary creature that some believe. The creature will be awakened to kill the owners of a local crematorium, after it becomes public that they were also heads of an organ trafficking business made at the expense of the locals’ corpses, which were not cremated, as previously thought, but abandoned there, rotting in muddy ponds or in a half-abandoned tool shed. What follows is a bath of blood and mutilated bodies, in which the dialogue is poorly written, the situations are quite cliché and the lack of logic reigns. Indeed, how could all those bodies be there without there being, all around, the smell of a nauseating and incriminating corpse? If just one corpse exhales a terrible odor, dozens make a place, even outdoors, unbearable.

In addition to the script flaws, the film is also not particularly happy in the performance of its cast. Almost all the actors stand out for their exaggeration, for their bizarre way of acting, for their surreal or histrionic ways or even for an erasure that almost seems to ask to be taken out of there. The exceptions to this truly embarrassing panorama are veterans Doug Bradley and Lance Henrikssen. Bradley was very convincing and competent in the role of the doctor, the film’s true villain, and his performance was only marred by a costume that looks recycled from a spaghetti western. Henrikssen, for his part, returns to the films that made him minimally famous, again in the shoes of Ed Harley, the protagonist of the first film.

Technically, it’s clearly a cheap movie and in which money doesn’t abound. Even so, the film manages to fulfill the minimum prerequisites. It never truly scares us, but gore connoisseurs will find some carnage enjoyable. Cinematography is not the film’s strong point, the filming work feels quite amateurish at times and there are clearly ill-framed scenes. The editing is mediocre, the effects are acceptable but not particularly brilliant, and the costumes are decent enough. The best are the sets, even though some of those houses are too European for a movie that wants to be set in the USA.

Perhaps a better sequel than _Blood Wings_, but still not a good movie. Those who are invested enough in practical effects might enjoy the return of the titular creature itself, but if you’re looking for success in plot, acting, direction, etc. then seek it elsewhere.

_Final rating:★★ – Had some things that appeal to me, but a poor finished product._

Better than “Bloodwings.”
I realize that ain’t saying much. However, for a johnny-come-lately, direct-to-video (or worse, direct-to-Sci Fi Channel) sequel, it’s got moxie. While the story stays true to all the canonical elements set forth in the first film, this sequel offers more than a simple retread of “Pumpkinhead”‘s plot. For instance, the demon’s quarry this time around is comprised of grave robbers and murders, yet their motives are a benefit to the impoverished town in which in they live. Moreover, of the three who call on the demon, one takes a disturbingly self-destructive and sadistic delight in Pumpkinhead’s carnage. So, as in the first, there’s some interesting moral ambiguity here.

On the other hand, much of the dialogue is stilted and contrived, and while the cast is game, none but Doug Bradley, as the villainous town doctor, are able to settle comfortably into their roles. Some of the cinematography is dynamic, but it seems as though only Stan Winston and Bojan Bazelli will ever be able to convincingly capture Pumpkinhead on film. (The CGI used for some scenes is downright embarrassing.)

At best, “Pumpkinhead: Ashes to Ashes” is a missed opportunity. It had real potential, and an extra million and a couple more rewrites might have brought it out. As it stands, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it, but die-hard Pumpkinhead fans that are able to see through the significant flaws might find something of merit here. It’ll be one of those films that rests in you memory better than on celluloid.

Highly impressive sequel effort
“Pumpkinhead III: Ashes to Ashes” is a really impressive sequel to a really entertaining original.

**SPOILERS**

After discovering a giant cache of bodies in the woods, all operated on illegally, Molly Sue Allen, (Tess Panzer) who lost a child to the cache, can’t bear the thought of the two responsible, Doc Fraser, (Doug Bradley) and Bunt Wallace, (Douglas Roberts) getting away with it and decides to use the legend of Pumpkinhead to wrong their right. As Pumpkinhead goes about it’s course and begins to reek vengeance upon the guilty party, Molly becomes less and less willing to help the others. Those marked by the creature struggle to stay alive during the course of it’s rampage.

The Good News: This is one of the better sequels around. The fact that the creature is up and running around quite early in the film is it’s best attribute. That allows for a very fast pace and a really wall-to-wall delivery. There’s really no stop to the film and it keeps the interest high. From the assault on the police station to the shootout in the motel to the final showdown, there’s a lot of great action scenes spread throughout to really keep it interesting. The Church scene is one of it’s best parts, and is one of the most action-packed parts of the film. The gore in here is not all that bad and follows up with some pretty bloody moments. There’s a very vicious slit throat, impalement on a metal spike, a spike in the chest, falling glass shards land in the face and several gunshot wounds, among other deaths. The splatter is quite well done as well, making it a realistic looking show as well. That helps it out tremendously and gives it a great feel. The design of the creature is still incredibly threatening and imposing, and a lot of mileage is gotten from it’s appearance. The story is pretty clever and creative. It follows along the general rules for the series and it keeps them in full view, never really changing it around and that’s a great accomplishments for the film. One great extra feature is that it allows for Bradley to get in some work where we won’t associate him with his famous character. The role is a nice change of pace and really livens up things a lot. There wasn’t a whole lot to dislike here and it’s a great film.

The Bad News: There’s very, very little here that wasn’t all that good. The fact that it slows down a tad towards the ending is a small problem, taking a small break from the mayhem to give some exposition that was nicely needed, but it’s not a big deal. The fact that Henriksen does appear very briefly at spurting moments is a little sad, but then again, these are the main things I could find wrong with the film.

The Final Verdict: Two very, very small problems haunt this one, and it’s one of the better films out. It follows the storyline pretty good, allowing for lots of great moments and a great continuity from the first one. Fans of the first one should invest time in this one, and all others interested are advised to give it a shot. It’s quite good.
