What in the GCSE drama is this?
Billie Piper is no Emerald Fennell or Phoebe Waller Bridge. This film is like someone has seen one episode of Flebag and wanted to make a film in the same wacky way but this has completely flopped. It has no plot or message. It’s genuinely quite a terrible film.
Sparse feasts…
Try as I might, I really struggled to make much sense of this – and regardless of whether or not I am just a bit thick, that is never a good thing for a film. Even on a simplified basis, the story was pretty slow. Auteur Billie Piper (“Mandy”) is the mother to the autistic young “Larch” (Toby Woolf). Aside from her son, her relationships are all a bit shot, and the film takes us through her attempts to make a go of it with the rather untypical “Pete” (Leo Bill) and well as holding down her job and dealing with her parents – her father (David Thewlis) who left them when she was younger, and her mother (an authentic effort from Kerry Fox) who is terminally ill. Despite the fact that it offers practically nothing joyous, I did think that the young Woolf played a blinder – he was throughly convincing as the youngster, but otherwise I found the characterisations and dialogue flat and uninteresting and the ending just left me wondering what the point was. It didn’t need to be a traditional, linear story with a beginning, middle and end – and maybe I just wasn’t on the right wavelength when I saw it, but of the eight of us in the cinema at the time, we all looked as bemused as each other at the end… One for the telly, I’d say…
