Not true blue
I feel bad having to give only a five rating as the lead character was a young person who acted his heart out and did so well but the movie doesn’t deserve a higher ranking. I would have enjoyed it ever so much more if it didn’t have the feel of movie-making by numbers: we must have some homosexual characters, we must knock Christians (this time mission nuns), we must have mystical Aboriginals etc… political correctness will be the death of good story telling. There is nothing wrong with each of these individually but it felt contrived as if the director had to get them on screen somehow.

And as much as I love stories about dogs I felt this one tried to milk that good will too much. The dog chasing the plane when the boy leaves, it was all too much. Maybe I would give it a higher rating if it hadn’t been called Red Dog as it felt like a blatant cashing-in on that crazily enjoyable film.

This wasn’t a story about the dog it was a story about a boy becoming a man. Great scenery, great acting and great dog it just didn’t come together as a good story.

Red Dog: True Blue is the second movie in the Red Dog series. This movie is a prequel that is supposed to have occurred before the first Red Dog movie. The NR rating for this movie is misleading. I strongly suggest parents watch this movie before allowing kids to watch it so you can judge the content for yourself.

CONTENT ADVISORY: This could have been a good movie but it is ruined by mysticism and perverse sexual subplots that don’t add anything to the movie. Which is sad, considering how easily the movie could have been made to be enjoyed by people of any age.

Michael finds and explores a cave and says it’s a great place for orgies but then admits he doesn’t even know what an orgy is. An alleged evil spirit causes peril and jeopardizes lives.

Just like the first Red Dog movie, Blue is shown to be passing gas a couple times and people leaving in disgust waiting for the smell to dissipate. Blue shown eating and swallowing a colorful pair of women’s underwear off the clothesline. Later Michael finds Blue with two of his legs through the arm holes of a woman’s bra that Blue removed from the clothesline. It is implied these items belong to Michael’s tutor Betty.

Big and Little John are shown wrestling and “rough housing” a couple times earlier in the movie. While Michael is branding cattle with Little John, Little John says to Michael, “Do you want to know a secret. Me and Big John are not really brothers, but we’re really close. Everyone thinks we’re brothers so we let them.” Little John asks Michael, “Do you understand what I am saying?” Michael replies “No.”

Michael has an inappropriate attraction to Betty and tries to have a relationship with her. Betty puts herself into a dangerous position when Michael reaches to hold her hand and she responds by holding his hand and wrapping her fingers around Michael’s. Michael tries to justify his attraction to Betty by saying Betty is only six years older than him just like Bill is only six years older than Betty.
