Authentic Movie – Not a 90’s Mentos commercial
I saw this film with my wife at a screening in Northwest Indiana, aka the Region. My wife had read the book and was interested in seeing how it adapted to the big screen. She was very happy with the result. I went in not knowing what to expect. Having lived in the Region my entire life, I thought it would be interesting to see how accurately the era was portrayed on film. The area has for decades been riddled with pockets of despair since the decline of the once strong manufacturing base of the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. The tough reputation of the residents has always been equal to the compassion they display in taking care of each other. Over the years that compassion has slowly been tempered by a touch of despair that nothing will ever really get better. I was pleasantly surprised by the authentic depiction of the characters. Connor Williams’ performance as Ray is truly outstanding. He depicts the reticent attitude so common with people growing up here in the 80’s and 90’s. He is believable and comes across as truly authentic to the Region. This film probably would have a wider audience appeal if the relationships were depicted more like those in a Mentos commercial or even “Good Will Hunting” with it’s fairy tale happy ending. However, that wouldn’t be authentic for the region any more than it was for Southie in Boston. True authenticity makes a much more powerful impact in a story, even if it isn’t as palatable to the masses.

Set in the mid 1990’s,”Region Rat” is a coming of age drama that follows the protagonist, Ray (Connor Williams), as he struggles to find a fit for himself. Divorced parents and weak family ties have made it difficult for Ray to put down roots anywhere. Just out of Seattle, where he stayed with his older sister for six months, the troubled teen is now tasked with resuming his studies. Neither of his parents seem unduly concerned with where he goes, and he chooses to return father’s apartment in the rundown, industrial sprawl in North West Indiana known as The Region.

Through his old friend Gabe (Jeff Harlow), he meets The Brain (Shon D’Mario Evans) and the beautiful Erin (Natassia Halbi), a seemly kindred spirit who seems to understand Ray on a level that no one else does. Of course it doesn’t hurt that he finds her attractive too and they soon develop a rapport, but as the facts begin to unravel, it quickly becomes clear that there’s a lot more to Erin than meets the eyes. He learns that Erin does not only have a reputation for preying on the newcomers, but also that she has a possessive and violent boyfriend Colin (Grafton Doyle) known for hurting anyone who gets too close to Erin. If you think you know where he’s headed, you probably don’t, as the confrontation between Ray and Colin results in a twist that puts Colin in the hospital and Ray in jail, but director Javier Reyna is more concerned with what happens in-between. Ray himself occasionally recedes into the background as “Regionrat” becomes more about this community’s social setting; every society is its own closed ecosystem, not least because adolescents aren’t known for taking the long view and Connor Williams is highly attuned to his characters’ inner worlds. After he is bailed out by two friends, Ricky(Rishi Das) and Patrick (John Hayden) in exchange for a favor, he goes on a fateful drive with Erin’s friend Joelene (Nova Gaver) that that leads to an accident which proves to be fatal for Joelene, but Ray survives, and the aftermath sees him brought closer to his mother, and reveals who his true friends are. Loosely evocative of “The Graduate,” “Regionrat” finds its protagonist repeatedly tripped up on the road to recovery. The self-seeking theme predominant in the film is less overt than it needs to be, but director Reyna displays remarkable creativity in what is also his first feature film.
