Ignored by everyone, the weary vagabond, who seems to be bitten by something, slowly succumbs to his lethal trauma and dies, only to come back as a ravenous reanimated corpse, attacking and spreading his virulent disease. Now, against the backdrop of a sudden zombie outbreak, three lucky survivors–the teenager runaway, Hye-Sun; her layabout boyfriend, Ki-woong, and her desperate father, Suk-gyu–fight tooth-and-nail to reunite. But, this is only the first night of the unforeseen epidemic, and all hope seems lost. Are the walking dead the only monsters?
Plot: Suk-gyu is desperately looking for his runaway daughter. He spares neither money nor effort and after a while his search leads to results. One of his contacts claims to have found the girl. But joy is replaced by shock when he finds out that she works as a prostitute in the center of Seoul. Suk-gyu decides to pose as a client to get close to his daughter. But just before the long awaited and dreaded reunion, panic breaks out at nearby Seoul Station. The place is very popular with the homeless of the Korean capital. And one of them, who had died during the day, comes alive again and start attacking and eating another misfortunate. The undead cannibal epidemic spreads like wildfire. The authorities hermetically close off the city center and decide to wait out the end of the outbreak, until there’s no one left…

Meanwhile, in Seoul Station …
While others not only boarded but also ride the Train to Busan (title of the live action picture), we also get this animated feature which plays in the same “universe” as the other movie. Having said that, you do get different characters in the starring roles and a movie that does indulge in what would happen if a zombie epidemic hit a city. Relationships between characters and story-lines begin to unfold, as much as some of the human psyche is.It’s a nice little add-on or spin off to Train to Busan, but it’s not a must watch to get the other movie or vice versa. It’s also very explicit with its violence as is the other movie and we get a lot of action scenes too. It does get a bit cliché here and there (father/daughter story) and has some minor flaws along the way. Even so it is more than entertaining to watch
Seoul Station Review: Not as great as Train to Busan, but has its own independent value.
Movie: Seoul Station (15)Rating: 4/5
TRAIN TO BUSAN turned out to be the best zombie apocalypse action thriller, in my opinion. I had never seen a film of this genre before, and thus I enjoyed it fully. Coming from the same director and called a prequel to TRAIN TO BUSAN, SEOUL STATION is a decent animated zombie horror flick, even though not as great as the former.
There’s nothing to talk about the performances, given the fact that it’s an animated film. The film’s storyline is quite decent, and this one looks quite scary at times. The screenplay is amazingly written, and the film grips you completely.
The film doesn’t have many great action sequences. There are a few but are not too great to be remembered. The animation, too is a little tacky as it lowers the impact the film would’ve had, had it not been animated.
But director Yeon Sang-ho holds the attention of the viewer, and delivers not only entertainment but also a hard-hitting social message as he did in TRAIN TO BUSAN. This is what makes him and films different from those of others.
SEOUL STATION is not as great as TRAIN TO BUSAN, but holds its own independent value as a film. If you’ll compare it to TRAIN TO BUSAN, you might be disappointed, but if you won’t, then you won’t be.
