Getting your whole community to uniformly bash a movie is as good as telling people to watch it.
I was about to disregard this movie and thought that maybe I’d check out what people have written about it on IMDb. Frankly, to any one that is not Mormon, the thorough and complete disgust I see on this site from people who are very obviously from the Mormon community doesn’t dissuade me from watching this movie, it actually encourages me. When people take so much effort to convince you not to watch something, I for one, think it’s probably worth watching. I have watched it now and I must say, it wasn’t the awful movie we are made to believe it was by the people posting on this site. To the contrary, I found it a very powerful and compelling movie and I’m glad to have watched it. I will certainly do some historical research to see where the alleged biases come in, but I have a feeling the movie will certainly not be quite the fiction that some of the posters have made it out to be.

My actual rating would have been a 6 or a 7 at best, but since there are people (I would assume those in the Mormon community) trying to bring the rating down simply because it shows a group of their people in an unfavourable light, I gave it a 10 to balance it out.

Accurate if heavy handed film!
This film was unflinching in its portrayal of the incident, but the story overall was fairly accurate. A few characters were added to underscore the message of the producers, that religious fanaticism is bad.

This is a film that has made the Mormons angry, but that’s really their problem. The Church of Latter Day Saints has never fully owned up to the role of their prophet, Brigham Young, in this event. I question, is their faith so thin that any criticism of its luminairies unacceptable? As a Catholic, I can look with disdain at inquisition and crusade, but not feel my faith diminished in the least. Mistakes are made by men, not God.

Usually, this incident doesn’t get a lot of attention because the Civil War broke out 3 years later. Few are aware of the incidents of the “Utah War”.

A quick synopsis of the plot. After being driven out of Missouri, Mormons attempted to set up their own “theodemocracy” called “Deseret” in the Utah territory. Federal officials reported back to President Buchanan that Young was acting like a dictator and Buchanan responded by sending in the Army with a newly appointed governor. Brigham Young ordered a mobilization of the Mormon militia to resist.

Wandering into the middle of this mess was the Francher Party, 140 settlers herding cattle and horses to California. Fanatical Mormons incited Paiute Indians to attack the settlers, telling them that the “Great Spirit” would make them immune to their bullets. When that failed, Mormons tricked the wagon train into thinking they would get safe passage, but in fact led them off and killed every man, woman and child over the age of 8.

The movie personalizes this movie by giving us a Romeo and Juliet story between Jonathan, the son of the local Bishop, and Emily a woman in the wagon train. The Bishop is immediately offended by a woman wearing pants (rare in the 19th century, but not so much on the frontier) and the fact they are transporting racehorses. (The Francher Party did have horses with them, but I’ve never seen any reference to them being “racehorses”.) Both of these details are embellishments to underscore religious fanaticism.

Jonathan is portrayed as the only sensible Mormon, who realizes that Brigham Young is a madman. He tries to save the settlers (who are killed in an extremely graphic action sequence that earned this otherwise inoffensive movie an R rating) but arrives too late. There is a great sequence where he and the settler girl get into a scripture quoting contest, and she points out that maybe he has lost his way from Jesus’ actual teachings.

The history is pretty solid. There really isn’t any way you can spin this to make the Church of Latter Day Saints look good. They do make the case that Brigham Young was aware of the massacre and in fact ordered it (a point that Mormons dispute, but doesn’t really pass the laugh test.) Terrance Stamp is quite intense as Brigham Young.

Other posters have complained about the dialog, but that’s really how people talked in the 19th century.
