Upon Sergeant Pepper’s death in 1958, the band’s instruments have been housed on display at Heartland City Hall as symbols of that love and joy. Before his death, Sergeant Pepper asked his adolescent grandson Billy Shears to take on the reins of forming his own band to continue to spread the message of joy and love. With Billy’s brother Dougie Shears as their Manager, Billy, now an adult, and his three best friends, brothers Mark, Dave, and Bob Henderson, embark on their lives as a new Lonely Hearts Club Band. They quickly come to the attention of Hollywood music producer B.D. Hoffler Of B.D. (Big Deal) Records. With the boys off to Hollywood to spread the words of joy and love to the world, enter into Heartland the evil and demented Mr. Mustard, an ex-real estate agent who wants to take over Heartland by destroying what made it famous. To do so, he plans to steal the instruments in city hall, and promote the music of the F.V.B. (Future Villain Band) in place of the Lonely Hearts Club Band. With Billy’s hometown girlfriend Strawberry Fields at their sides, the boys try to thwart Mustard’s dastardly plan at their own peril while still trying to spread their own message of love and joy to the world.
Plot: A small town band makes it big, but loses track of their roots, as they get caught up into the big-time machinations of the music biz. Now, they must thwart a plot to destroy their home town. Built around the music of the beatles, this musical uses some big name groups like Peter Frampton and Aerosmith.

Even a Train Wreck Can Be Entertaining
I saw this movie three times as a teenager. This was before I had listened to the Beatles very much. I loved the movie and I even owned the soundtrack. At forty-four, I have heard the Beatles, seen the fall of the BeeGees and seen the stubborn persistence of an almost geriatric Aerosmith. They are indeed the “Future Villain Band”.
Love the Beatles? You will hate this movie. Interested in a simpler time when the hair of rock stars sits in a quiet mass atop the head as if waiting to attack (check out Barry Gibb…or is it Maurice?)? Interested in hearing music that you grew up with and loved torn to pieces by dupes of producers that no longer cared if what they made was good…only profitable? Then, this is the movie for you as well…
Songs done well: Come Together, Got to Get You into My Life, Strawberry Fields and I’ll Never Do You No Harm…
Songs that didn’t stink: Lucy in the Sky, You never Give me Your Money and A Day in the Life…
Songs that were killed and the corpses urinated upon: When I’m Sixty-four, Fixing a Hole, Mister Mustard and Because…
Beatlemania at Its Not-so-Good
What a strange movie. Generally regarded as a fiasco when it was released, the movie takes all the Lennon/McCartney songs from the famous Beatles album of the same title and acts them out, with a cast of stars that includes such marvelous talents as Peter Frampton, the Bee Gees, Aerosmith, Billy Preston, Steve Martin, Earth Wind & Fire, and the incomparable George Burns flouncing about singing Beatles tunes at age 82. Somehow I managed to miss this movie when it was released in 1978. Watching it for the first time a quarter of a century later was more a surreal experience than the “bad trip” critics called it. The movie comes off not as a celebration of the Beatles musical odyssey but a satire, and that may account for much of its negative reception. Nobody was ready or willing to see their darling Beatles exposed with their own songs as purveyors of nonsensical farce. My favorite numbers are “Come Together” performed by Aerosmith and “Get BAck” by Billy Preston. It is also fun to see how many stars in the title song finale you can identify (Carol Channing, Jose Feliciano, Tina Turner, Connie Stevens, Margaret Whiting among them), all looking delighted to be part of what was sure to be a major hit—not.
