Synopsis

Watch: Sister Act 1992 123movies, Full Movie Online – Deloris Wilson (Whoopi Goldberg), a black woman who has chosen the stage name Deloris Van Cartier, is a Reno, Nevada lounge singer, she, the lead in a girl trio, in which she also chooses and arranges the music and choreographs the shows. She is a wisecracking, showy woman who has always loved music. She, however, only has her current job being hired by her married lover, Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel), to sing in his casino’s lounge. She learns of Vince’s true business as a gangster when she walks in on him killing one of his employees who wronged him. As a witness to the murder, Deloris goes on the run to the police, Lieutenant Eddie Souther (Bill Nunn), who has long been running an operation to get enough evidence to put Vince behind bars, this murder, which could be the metaphorical nail in Vince’s coffin. However, Vince has put a contract out on Deloris’ life to prevent her from testifying against him. As such, Eddie has to hide her until the trial, which will be at least two months. Where Eddie chooses is St. Katherine’s, a poor Catholic parish and convent in a tough neighborhood in San Francisco. The convent’s Mother Superior (Dame Maggie Smith) reluctantly takes Deloris in, that reluctance as Deloris is not anywhere near being close to looking or acting like a typical nun. Furthermore, the Mother Superior does not tell any of the sisters Deloris’ true identity or the real reason for her being at St. Katherine’s. With the Mother Superior cloistering the sisters behind the convent walls to pray for the salvation mostly of down and out of the neighborhood while keeping the sisters safe from harms of the outside world, there is an immediate and continual clash of wills between her and Deloris. Deloris, as renamed Sister Mary Clarence, does have an effect on two of the sisters, Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy), a perpetually perky woman, and Mary Robert (Wendy Makkena), who always feels left behind in whatever is happening in life. The clash between Deloris and the Mother Superior leads to the Mother Superior restricting Deloris to one task at the convent, one that leads to good and bad changes at St. Katherine’s, the bad most specifically in potentially leading Vince and his associates to Deloris. Those changes also bring the battle of wills between Deloris and Mother Superior to a head, unless each can see the positive in what is happening in relation to their life at the convent..
Plot: A Reno singer witnesses a mob murder and the cops stash her in a nunnery to protect her from the mob’s hitmen. The mother superior does not trust her, and takes steps to limit her influence on the other nuns. Eventually the singer rescues the failing choir and begins helping with community projects, which gets her an interview on TV—and identification by the mob.

Mary Clarence? Like Clarence Williams III from The Mod Squad?

When a worldly singer witnesses a mob crime, the police hide her as a nun in a traditional convent where she has trouble fitting in.

Whoopi Goldberg is the sister act of the title, and boy does she have a great time with the characterisation. It’s hardly pulling up any trees, and it holds few surprises, yet it’s so warm and gentle with its humour it’s near impossible to dislike.

The laughs obviously come from Goldberg’s street wise gal trying to adapt to life in a convent. The big message that unfolds, as she gets more at ease with her surroundings, is that not only can earthy girls come to be honourable by learning new fortitudes, but also that they can positively affect those around them in a perceived stuffy environment.

The trajectory of the nunnery choir under Goldberg’s tutorship – from wailing cats to cherubic angels – is the film’s highlights, while Maggie Smith as the prim and proper Mother Superior is class unbound. Harvey Keitel as the gangster who is after our sister’s blood is wasted, and the ending is never really in doubt, yet this is a good pick me up movie, undemanding fun for those after a quick smiley fix. 7/10

**One of the great comedies of the decade.**

We are facing a film that was a huge success when it was released and continues, even today, to have a vast legion of fans. It’s one of those light, friendly comedies that doesn’t age, is always current, and is a pleasure to revisit from time to time. The expertly written screenplay tells the story of Deloris, a casino singer who must be protected by the police after witnessing her lover, a married gangster, kill a police snitch at close range. The authorities’ solution is to hide her in a convent, where she will have to assume a false identity and pretend that she is a nun. Of course, most of the film’s jokes come precisely from the difficult adaptation of a showgirl to a strongly strict environment, where obedience and discipline are taken seriously.

The film works wonderfully well, and despite the years that have passed, it remains an amazingly up-to-date film that doesn’t show its age. It’s one of those films that we can watch and rewatch without getting tired, from time to time, and that is still fondly remembered by many people today. It’s not a great film from a technical point of view, with average cinematography and editing, good sets and decent costumes, but no big fights and other challenging technical elements.

The cast is lavish and full of talent. The protagonist is the great Whoopi Goldberg, who was at the time experiencing one of the highlights of her career (shortly before, she had received the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for _Ghost_), becomes, with this film, truly an icon. Next to her were the grandiose Maggie Smith and the funny Kanthy Najimi, Wendy Makkena and Mary Wickes, who bring to life the most significant nuns of that convent. The villain, in turn, is very well done by Harvey Keitel.

Great Whoopi Goldberg Comedy!
This is a great comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg as Reno lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a homicide committed by her lover. As a result, a cop hides her in a traditional convent, where she has to pose as nun Sister Mary Clarence.

Goldberg delivered in her role as a nun trying to fit in with the others, providing drama and comic relief in a serious setting. Her witnessing the crime and having to hide in the convent just adds on to her troubles of being a struggling singer, providing a solid plot line. And, the subplot about the nuns’ tone-death choir in their endangered convent is interwoven in the story very well, giving intrigue and suspense to the fast-paced movie.

Maggie Smith gave a very eloquent and commanding performance as Mother Superior; my favorite line of hers is when she said to Sister Mary Clarence, “God has put you here, take the hint.” And, Kathy Najimy as cheerful Sister Mary Patrick, Wendy Makkena as mellow Sister Mary Robert and Mary Wickes witty as Sister Mary Lazarus each gave charming performances, helping Sister Mary Clarence adjust to life in the convent.

I enjoyed how Goldberg’s characters establishes her new purpose in life as she helps the Choir become better singers and help spread new life in the church, trying to save it from being closed. This leads on to an exciting climax and a rescue mission by the nuns.

Overall, this is one of my favorite movies and all comedy lovers should catch this film.

Grade A
