Essential for Lloyd fans; New York in the 20s the icing on top
A delightful Harold Lloyd piece in which, in a nice change of pace, his character is a self-assured, confident young man living in New York during the roaring twenties, who loves baseball as much as he loves his girlfriend. Trouble is afoot however, when business tycoons try to buyout his father-in-law’s lone horse and buggy track for their development. Things turn unlawful when goons are hired to try and thwart the buggy’s run, which must be made at least once every 24 hours, or Pop can lose his license.

Everything plays out in the traditional Lloyd way, with wonderful gags and set pieces, but the biggest treat of all is the roughly twenty minute escape Lloyd takes with his girl to Coney Island. Wonderfully shot, it is truly a pleasure to see Coney Island in it’s hey day. As well, Babe Ruth does a nice turn playing himself.

A must see.

An entertaining time capsule
The gags are amusing, not laugh out loud funny, but Harold Lloyd really transports us to New York circa 1928 with this film, making it an entertaining time capsule of sorts. The many street scenes are marvelous, as is the trip to Coney Island, where we see Lloyd and Ann Christy scarfing down food, going on rides, and trying out the carnival games. Babe Ruth was on top of the baseball world at this time, and I enjoyed seeing his extended cameo in the taxicab. I like how Lloyd includes so many details in his films – signs, tickets, billboards, etc and looking these things up is an added pleasure for me (even in this case if they reveal little baseball goofs, like the dates of some of Ruth’s homers in 1927, when he astounded everyone by clubbing 60). Brief moments to watch for include Lloyd giving himself the finger in a funhouse mirror, and Lou Gehrig smiling in the background for a few seconds at the end of Ruth’s wild ride. The storyline of the little guy being pressured to sell his little horse drawn carriage business by big businessmen is just a plot device, but it’s a good one since doesn’t this always seems to be the way? Lastly, “King Tut the Dog” was a good boy.
