I bought this film because I already had the other ones in my collection and my kids as well as myself do like Starship Troopers. I was not even aware that it was a cgi-animated feature when I clicked on the buy button.
I found the film surprisingly good. Sure, it is a fairly simple story appealing to fans of Starship Troopers and action/Sci-Fi fans in general but it surprised me in a positive way. My expectations was not the highest, especially not with the disasters that have been released as follow ups to the first Starship Troopers movie.
The CGI is quite good, there’s plenty of action and, although the story has more of a comic magazine depth to it, it holds together. There is a few of the usual silly, illogical, things in the plot which makes you squirm a bit in your seat but nothing too disastrous.
If I should complain about something it would be that the sound, at least on my Blu-ray disk, was somewhat weak. Despite being 5.1 DTS Master Audio it was quite lacking in depth and the LFE-channel was almost non-existent. On a Sci-Fi movie, especially one with plenty of weapons, not to mention battle-cruisers, flying around, that is a bit of a bummer.
If you like watching other people play video games, you might enjoy _Starship Troopers: Invasion_. Maybe. You probably still won’t though.
_Final rating:★★ – Had some things that appeal to me, but a poor finished product._
Fit for purpose
I am a massive fan of the first real action movie so I can’t help myself from grabbing these titles when ever I see them.
The CGI is fairly good, not up to some of the other CGI feature length titles that have come before it, but totally watchable.
I didn’t really enjoy this movie but to write a fair review I think you have to consider its target audience. This is a space action romp. There is no onion to peel here; no layers of story where the viewer obtains a deeper understanding of the human condition.
This is about aliens, explosions, space ships, leather cat-suit cladded action models and cartoon boobies. In that respect it does its job perfectly!
The dialogue is cheesy, the characters are so full of testosterone each is a whisper away from throwing themselves on a grenade for the Republic (and lots of them do)but that is part of the fun.
If you can take this at face value you will have a great evening. If you want something with depth or serious storyline then best keep walking.
If you enjoyed the first movie or the book, then this won’t be terrible. Too each his own and all that, but I found it to be quite amusing. I was a fan of the book, the first movie was amusing even if it didn’t follow the book too closely. With the limited graphics in the late 90s, the powered armor would not have looked good at all. The graphics are decent, the action sequences are well done. The movie seems rushed in some parts, the plot was nothing terribly complex, but it’s a classic alien/bug hunt; people die in a variety of noble/self-sacrificial ways, as befits a cap trooper, bugs are killed and there’s lots of explosions. Better than the previous three, but the bar was never set very high.
