Plot: In August 2015, an ISIS terrorist boarded train #9364 from Brussels to Paris. Armed with an AK-47 and enough ammo to kill more than 500 people, the terrorist might have succeeded except for three American friends who refused to give in to fear. One was a college student, one was a martial arts enthusiast and airman first class in the U.S. Air Force, and the other was a member of the Oregon National Guard, and all three pals proved fearless as they charged and ultimately overpowered the gunman after he emerged from a bathroom armed and ready to kill.

asking too much from amateurs
Spencer Stone and Alek Skarlatos are childhood best friends. Spencer’s mom (Judy Greer) and Alek’s mom (Jenna Fischer) are single moms. The kids often get in trouble and the principal of the Christian school blames their upbringing. The friends befriend fellow trouble maker Anthony Sadler. Spencer and Alek would join the military. On their leave, they decide on an European vacation with their lifelong buddy Anthony. They are on the train to Paris where they confront a terrorist.The basic problem is that director Clint Eastwood is asking too much from these real life heroes. They are not trained actor and they can’t hold the screen. I do like the childhood section which obvious does not have the three real people. It also ties into Spencer’s heroism a couple of times. In reality, that’s all that’s needed. It just needs a couple of more scenes that relate to his impulse to act at that moment. Otherwise, the movie needs more of the initial fight without the three Americans. Quite frankly, the first third of the movie could be getting on the train, first noticing the long bathroom break, and then the struggle up to the point when Spencer peers around the seat. Then it can go back to their childhood and cut back on some of their adult lives to save them from their acting limitations. Eastwood’s conviction is bigger than his pragmatism. Greengrass would have smoked this.

Unexpected and Refreshing
This is one movie I am so thankful I didn’t read reviews about. Had I read the reviews I might have missed a fantastic movie. Of course everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, but I believe those who give this movie negative reviews don’t grasp what they are actually watching. In my opinion, Mr. Eastwood has orchestrated a masterpiece here. Some will think the movie starts slow; I thought the same thing until reflecting on the whole at the end. If you go, don’t prejudge half way through before giving the entire movie a chance to tell it’s story. I left the film reminded there is still good to be found in this evil world. I left the film reminded of why I chose to serve in the military in the first place. I left the film proud of the people who played a role in this story. Go see it … look for the humanity in it … and understand the movie couldn’t achieve what it does with a quick start and all action. Two thumbs way up for Mr. Eastwood and the cast!
