A depressing and frustrating experience
The movie’s frustrating because it gives you a problem in this world to be angry about, depressing because that problem probably won’t be solved anytime too soon. It becomes even more depressing because it puts more than one face on the problem and allows us to see the issue through someone who experienced it firsthand.

It doesn’t matter if that person is fictional or not. Ralph Fiennes makes him real, and Meirelles surrounds him with what looks and feels like the real world. Ralph Fiennes plays Justin Quayle, a British diplomat married to Tessa (Rachel Weisz, in a heartbreaking performance just as noteworthy as Fiennes’s). Justin has a job to do in Africa, and Tessa makes him take her with him, despite his misgivings. They end up entangled in a pharmaceutical battle that has taken lives before and, before the movie is over, will take many more.

The subject matter here begs to be heard, and Meirelles has provided it with a compelling venue. He films with a style that constantly keeps us engaged. It’s hard to find fault with this movie. I didn’t find myself wholeheartedly loving it either, but I admire it for its courage and emotional truth. The Constant Gardener grips you from the start in the lives of these two people and never lets you go, not even when the movie is over. It’s hard to forget this story. I wouldn’t want to.

the brilliant, Brazilian director Fernando Meirelles once again makes a film about things the global community has minimal exposure to. . the raw, powerful cinematography, the graphic honesty, poignant score, art direction and production values that we saw in CITY OF GOD is here in this exquisite, unpretentious, important film. i am one of those individuals who stays to the very end of the credits and i read the personal note written by Meirelles. my hope is that every individual who sees this courageous film stays long enough to read it. i am also hoping to see this film with the inclusion of the edits made before it’s release. there is nothing controversial about this film. it is a small part of a much larger truth which affects all of us. and i would be remiss not to mention the performances in this film. Rachael Weisz and Ralph Fiennes were characters not so different from you or i. they and the rest of the cast were brilliant, contrasting yet binding. and that little girl who ran beside the plane she disembarked broke my heart by the simple purity of the scene. this world we live in is a constant battle between good and evil, and those definitions are often blurred by individual perspective. but not here. Meirelles has done us all a great boon by making this film. even for those who have told me they only go to movies for the popcorn. if we, in our complacency, are not part of the solution, then we are part of the problem. supporting this film is the very least we can do. and the bonus is that it may encourage other directors to make like-minded films filled with beauty, honour, redemption, and exposure of the worst kinds of evil that spends billions on direct advertising, gifts to doctors, suppressed information and out-right lies and misinformation. this film enhances us as a species, enriches our minds, and reminds us that films do not always have to be frivolous entertainment fueled by box office returns.
