O-oh, the weather outside is frightful…
Good old-fashioned, black & white Science Fiction/disaster-movie classic that effectively emerges two giant contemporary fears at once, namely the Cold War and the rapidly evolving nuclear science. Whereas most other 60’s Sci-Fi movies used the versatile side-effects of nuclear testings for grotesque apocalypse stories, involving mutated animals or even people, the premise of “The Day the Earth Caught Fire” is much more realistic and genuinely disturbing. A duo of Daily Express reporters discover, with the help of a weather girl, that the earth has been tilted off its axis because both the Russians and the Americans ignited their H-bombs simultaneously. The unusually high temperatures in Londen, as well as other inexplicable weather phenomenons, indicate that our planet is moving towards the sun very fast. Despite an obvious lack budget, director Val Guest (creator of other genre milestones such as “The Quatermass Experiment” and “The Abominable Snowman”) did everything possible to make this film look like a captivating and paranoid drama. The images of a dying Londen, enshrouded in fog and heat, are truly atmospheric and there also are some very intelligent extra elements added, like new epidemics as a result of water shortness. Surprisingly enough, there’s even room for an honest (and credible, for once) love-story between the cynical reporter and the overly-emotional weather-girl. Personally, I didn’t really like the ending but it does typify 60’s cinema greatly. The acting performances are splendid, with Leo McKern (“X-the Unknown”), Edward Judd (“Island of Terror”) and the adorable Janet Munro (former child star of “Swiss Family Robinson”). The Day the Earth Caught Fire is a vastly underrated Sci-Fi gem, probably because it wasn’t a Hammer production, and genre fans should urgently re-discover it. Highly recommended!

Excellent example of realist British science fiction
Simultaneous polar nuclear tests push Earth sunward, causing dramatic climate change and a breakdown of civil society. Events are seen primarily from the perspectives of newsmen at the ‘Daily Express’, including intemperate Peter Stenning (Edward Judd) and his friend, the more sedate and scientifically literate, Bill Maguire (Leo McKern), and Jeannie Craig (Janet Munro), young women who learns the severity of the situation while working on the switchboard at The Meteorological Office. While the basic premise is farfetched (the most powerful nuclear bombs are trivial compared to the planet’s mass (6 septillion kg (US)), the rest of the film is grimily realistic, as London is hit by torrential rains, dense fogs, cyclonic winds and finally a heat-wave and drought. Unlike the “Keep Calm and Carry On” stiff-upper-lip model of English decorum under pressure, panic breaks out, along with rioting, looting, and black-marketing as the true existential nature of the catastrophe becomes known. The effective apocalyptic imagery is primarily done with matte paintings but the illusions, such as an empty Thames River or a London buried in thick, opaque fog, are quite convincing. Val Guest’s direction is excellent, as are the cast and script (although the romantic/sexual interplay between Peter and Jeannie is dated and Peters ‘pushy insistence’ and Jeanie’s ‘inevitable compliance’ may offend some modern viewers). The dialogue is fairly mature, especially the ‘meet cute’ couple’s repartee (with its references to ‘one night stands’) and quick-eyed viewers may catch a glimpse toplessness. The ambiguous ending is perfect, especially considering of the film’s ‘Fleet Street’ leitmotif. The film is particularly interesting in light of current concerns about global warming – in the film, the cause and timeline of Earth’s lethal overheating is completely fictional but the dramatic consequences are worrisomely not. Along with the first two Quatermass films (both directed by Guest), ‘The Day the Earth Caught Fire’ represents the best of mid-century British science fiction film-making.
