Creeping unease
This indie pic finds creepy unease in a generic suburban setting. After a family moves into a new house, the personality of one member begins to change. Is the house itself haunted? Has the restless spirit of a previous owner been transferred?Although most haunted house stories take the OLD DARK HOUSE route, this focuses on a very Californian setting outside San Diego, and includes the tried and true tropes of the genre such as a Ouija board, a grizzled exorcist, and a basement where something bad is festering.
THE EVIL DOWN THE STREET mostly explores transference of evil, and is notable for its atmosphere and increasing dread rather than body count or gore score. I would have liked to see the evil vanquished with a little more difficulty, but, overall, this contained little thriller/horror knows its audience and delivers the goods.
An entire family of shrieking lunatics
Yowie wowie, there is a disturbingly large number of painfully fake reviews for this film all with some of the most boring and generic titles plastered on the first page. You barely need to watch this film for some minutes before realizing just how fake all those reviews must be.
The story is incredibly boring due to how terribly written the dialogue is and even more terribly delivered the acting is.
The acting is so unimaginably terrible it borders between sounding like this is every single actor’s first time acting, not even rehearsing any of the scenes. The line delivery is almost comical, sounding like a group of middle schoolers reading out loud random movie lines with absolutely no direction.
As a result, this means that multiple scenes inexplicably devolve into one or more of the characters shrieking at each other like lunatics, then instantly calming down for no reason.
At one point, the husband is very strongly suspicious of his wife, and decides to plan an impromptu road trip, while inviting a priest over for dinner who had dealt with the house earlier. The wife says she will go on the road trip, then goes to the living room to drink wine. The husband comes out, sees her, and LOUDLY SCREAMS AND CURSES HER OUT.
This comes literally out of nowhere. The entire movie is like this, just a nonstop trainwreck of people blurting out lines, the wife in particular coming across as so intensely belligerent it becomes absurd and over the top, like a cartoon villain, and absolutely EVERY character seems to jump immediately to the same conclusion within the first 30-40 minutes, then proceed to spend almost the entire rest of the movie doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
This whole film feels like it was written by very young children, then acted and directed based on extensive notes somehow made by the children.
