The Fluffy Movie
The Fluffy Movie (or ‘Unity Through Laughter’) is primarily a comedy performance film, with a narrative introduction in a flashback depicting Gabriel Iglesias’ parents’ meeting, as well as his birth and childhood. With cable specials, TV series, and animated films, a gifted comic like Iglesias can work constantly. The Fluffy Movie is a collection of Iglesias’ current stand-up material, not his definitive work. Iglesias is always charming and frequently laugh-out-loud funny and it’s very clear here.

This one is a little unusual in that it begins with the comic riffing on his relationship with Martin Moreno, his opening act, the set of which is not included in the film. Nonetheless, the stories of their exploits are entertaining, particularly an extended look at their trip to India. The film (special) is consistently funny, but it is rarely dazzling, being very workmanlike but still a job well done by a gifted comedian.

Iglesias takes it up a notch near the end of the special when he talks about finally meeting his own absentee father after more than 30 years of separation and interweaves it with stories about his own relationship with his son. This extended bit gains traction, transcending the routine-but-still-funny stand-up fare delivered throughout the rest of the special.
