Greased Lightning
A middle-aged social misfit is forced to confront the possibility that his abusive father is the local serial killer in this outlandish black comedy. This is not the easiest film to warm to with deliberately over-the-top performances, repetitive dialogue and the two male leads constantly wandering around nude, however, the pure wackiness on display has a certain charm. There are also several very funny moments as Michael St. Michaels keeps complaining “you probably think I’m the greasy strangler!” when everyone from hotdog vendors to his own son refuses to put more grease on his food, and as he dons bizarre outfits without giving a second thought to how he looks. Not all of the jokes work, with far too much toilet humour in the mix, but it is an amusing film from start to finish with all its weirdness. What’s more, the film even spins an at-times touching tale of father and son coming to understand and appreciate one another in the backdrop. This is certainly not a movie for all tastes, but in between the pitch perfect electro funk music score, the imaginative costumes and the surprisingly decent makeup effects, there is a lot here to like. The film admittedly goes a little off the deep end towards the end and gets a little too weird for its own good, but this might otherwise be the most refreshingly unusual horror-comedy since ‘Otto; or Up with Dead People’.
The weirdest US movie ever?
“The Greasy Strangler” is one of the strangest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s like the filmmakers saw “Gummo” and “Small Apartments” and thought, I can go weirder than that. It has those movies’ fascination with communities of oddballs with awful, yet fully fledged, fashion sense who also spend a lot of time undressed, to the detriment of the viewer.Unlike those two movies, the weirdness doesn’t stop at the end credits. “The Greasy Strangler” has only one performer I recognised, who is hardly a household name, and the rest all have strange names that beg the assumption that they are fake, eg. Michael St Michaels.
The plot is something to do with a hideous father and son pair who live together. When at home, they generally wear only underwear. When out and about, they dress like the world’s thriftiest drag queens. When naked, they are something else entirely, different from the rest of humanity, and each other.
The father likes grease on everything, including grapefruit. That this does not arouse suspicion in a neighbourhood where a serial killer fittingly named “The Greasy Strangler” is at large tells you something about the mindset of the individuals in this film. The strangler looks like a monster, but is actually a naked man covered in grease. He appears to kill not only by strangulation, but also punches a man’s eyes into his head with ease that suggests the man’s skull is made from plasticine. When he does throttle his victims, their eyeballs tend to pop out of their skulls. The killer fries these orbs, in grease, and eats them.
The movie does seem to play by its own set of rules, at least. All the death scenes are ridiculous, using special effects akin to clay- mation to convey physical impossibility.
If the above sounds crass, I haven’t even mentioned the movie’s explicit sex scenes, with implied acts of cunnilingus and digital penetration. The film’s language is also highly explicit, with numerous c-words and graphic sexual references.
This isn’t a movie for the faint of heart, in other words, but for purveyors of the truly bizarre, it’s a must see.
