Plot: In 1895, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was the most famous writer in London, and Bosie Douglas, son of the notorious Marquess of Queensberry, was his lover. Accused and convicted of gross indecency, he was imprisoned for two years and subjected to hard labor. Once free, he abandons England to live in France, where he will spend his last years, haunted by memories of the past, poverty and immense sadness.

Acting masterclass
This was an absorbing tale largely because I hadn’t a clue about Wilde’s last days. The acting was excellent, each actor delivering a completely believable naturalistic turn. Despite the great support acting if the lead, Rupert Everett ( almost unrecognisable) hadn’t been so completely absorbing it could have been dire. He was remarkable, managing the multiple tones and moods Wilde goes through. A tale of sadness and joy and redemption. Such an interesting movie.

An Oscar worthy performance
Rupert Everett deserved an Oscar for playing this role. There have been others like Peter Finch, Robert Morley and Stephen Fry but none of their performances have the authenticity of this interpretation. In gruelling scene after scene we see his decline and fall and instead of concentrating on the trials and what led up to them we see his life after in Paris and Naples. Memories of his past glories intersperse the narrative of the last years, but mainly the film concentrates on a terrible reunion with Alfred Douglas and the love that Robbie Ross gives him during his final ordeals. I found the Ross relationship to be the most moving; loving Wilde but Wilde not loving him enough. This so far has been an untold aspect of Wilde’s life, and the one gleam in the film of a positive homosexuality. The rest is pathetic and for once the Tchaikovsky Symphony, the 6th which has been called the ‘ Pathetique ‘ is appropriate. I personally do not consider Wilde as an homosexual icon, but his suffering is emblematic of all homosexual persecution and justly so. As a man he lived a complex life, and not one to be applauded for its duplicity. Edward Carpenter deserves the status of being an icon for his lack of compromise in being what he was; a man who loved other men simply and with dignity and who the law left alone. Wilde in some way begged to be persecuted and for this he was jailed, spat upon by the too eager British public and left finally to rot in Paris. Everett shows this degradation clearly, and the continuing need for allowing Douglas to have sex with younger men in front of him, and also Wilde’s need for paid sex with a youth from the Paris slums, while telling his fairy tale of ‘ The Happy Prince ‘ to his younger brother. All this is beautifully filmed and the acting, without exception was perfect. That society is cruel and that certain people are part of that same cruelty, heterosexual and homosexual is made clear and for that cold water of reality I give the film a 9. I would like to give it a 10 but certain maudlin scenes that beg for tears to fall prevents me. Other than those the film and Everett deserve all the accolades for being the best film on Wilde made.
