Excellently crafted, beautiful film
I do love dystopian films. They just hit the right spot in my brain, but only if they are done right. This, was done right.

With believable characters, and a proper amount of back story, this film deals with how humans cope with normal life when something as basic as stepping outside for breath of fresh air becomes impossible.

It doesn’t try to be anything overly amazing, but revolves around Marc and his struggle to reunite with his love, Julia, in an unstable world. As they say, it’s not the destination – it’s the journey. That applies quite well here.

For those afraid of subtitled films, the dialog is sparse enough – do not pass this one by for that reason.

Satisfying sci fi
I’m so glad this movie exists. It’s a beautiful thing, ironically; the end of the world but thank God its not another zombie invasion, or the end of electricity, or a nuclear apocalypse, or contagion or blindness, or vampire aliens. I remember years ago when the Spanish movie Rec did wonders for enfranchising the zombie genre. This one does the same for disaster movies. Stunning visuals start to creep in from about half the way in, and locations get increasingly interesting (and architectural), as well as being varied. This is a carefully thought out movie, nothing comes across as unnatural or exaggerated, yet driving a good pace and sensible script. The soundtrack is conventional, but also moving or tense when required. Nowhere does the film lag. There are several stunning moments, one particularly surprising, that would have made the trailer a breeze to edit. I thought the actors at the top of their game, and well cast. The use of hundreds of extras lifted everything. The action is restrained but realistic, a bit of a revelation these days (don’t expect blood and gore). To accent the sense of doom the photography seems to be slightly saturated with a cyan filter, a deft touch. Flashbacks are used sparingly and appropriately, another deft touch. I nearly cried at the end. Please make sure The Last Days is in your sci fi collection. This work cannot be ignored.
