it break my heart
It really breaks my heart to have to do this, but this sequel is really not good at all.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

first, i appreciate that this film was released by the authors themselves on a famous sharing website, and they simply ask those willing, to make a donation on the main website for the film. this is honest budget filmmaking that i am willing to back.

However, the film is … not good.

The original The Man From Earth was a really great film, shot with little money, on one set, but never boring, with some good acting, some good dialogue, and while not perfect, the really good story idea at the core of the film makes for a great final product, a film i would recommend to everyone.

But here, we start with a group of students in a museum, and their teacher is .. not a teacher. Have you ever had a teacher? That lady there is not a teacher. She’s never seen a teacher, and or has no recollection of what a teacher would speak like. The kids are likewise super-tokenish in their actions, and, well simply put none of the main character of the first 90% of the film can act in any way. They simply read their lines in the most obvious “acting, how hard can it be” style.

The dialogue itself is super-forced. I can clearly see the writer had to hit a specific target, and tried to stuff as much development as they could in there. Compare this to the first film, that is simply summed up in “guy tells his friends he is immortal”, but takes a ton of dialogue to get there.

So, the acting is atrocious.

The story is yet again of the same protagonist of the first film, now teaching at a different college after a few years, and his students discover a book written by one of the characters in the first film, which out the protagonist as an immortal. They challenge him (after waaay too much development) and he gives them a false story, but the character previously and relentlessly painted as religious goes full skitzo on him, and eventually another character abducts him. At this stage the film changes into what was obviously the first part written of the script, and quickly advances to a hastly thrown together conclusion of the protagonist finding out he is finally aging.

There is very little of this story which carries any impact. The kids are really horrid actors and the characters themselves are superficial and stupid, without any depth.

Honestly, looking at The Man From Earth (the first), Tony Todd, John Billingsley, Ellen Crawford, Richard Riehle, these are really solid actors. What in the heavens persuaded director Richard Shenkman that he could replace them with some film school kids and expect to come up with anything but a Twilight clone.

Also, and i really feel like i’m driving a stake through his heart, the camera and lighting work from the first film were both fairly bad, but since it was all in one set, it wasn’t too noticeable; here, jumping sets like a crazy person, it just looks like a student film shot on a goPro.

I’m sorry but this film is really not worth anyone’s time. And in NO WAY does this compare to the absolutely excellent Man From Earth, which everyone should immediately go out and buy.
