‘The Night Before’ makes for very amusing viewing, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie are great together, I like all three actors individually and as a trio they are just as terrific – all give entertaining performances.
Rogen plays the most obvious role for him yet absolutely nails it, Gordon-Levitt is probably the weaker of the three but is still pleasant to watch – as is Mackie. The casting is top notch, with supports like Michael Shannon and Tracy Morgan. There are other noteworthy faces involved too, like Ilana Glazer and Lorraine Toussaint.
The plot isn’t anything crazy or distinctive, yet still feels suitably fresh for the vast majority. I will say, though, the film does hit a bit of a wall at around the midway point, but thankfully picks up almost immediately – thanks to a great scene with a couple of fun cameos.
An enjoyable film. It’s ridiculous, but they make it work. Recommended.
The skeleton of The Night Before is very clichéd, but the cast is magnificent and the requisite amount of jokes land.
Final rating:★★½ – Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole.
Molotov of Druggery and Mazel-Tovely Awesome good time
When I was a teen I warned everyone I knew to look after their relationships: parents, siblings, children, lovers, and especially friends. Nothing in this life lasts forever. The only constant – is CHANGE. Blah blah blah.
People move on with their own agendas and perceived roles in their lives and this puts a great strain on previous interactions that we often take for granted after our formative educational years. Friendships are usually the most likely things to suffer, fade, and disappear once people grow up. This movie is a fun , veiled tale of what we ALL must go through with regards to those changes ,and I sympathize with it, fore tis a central part of the human condition.
There’s laughs, spills, not too many thrills, or chills, though for a xmas movie, thats just mein penchant for terrible har har making. But some people do these types of things, no gender analysis needed to ruin a good time. HOWEVER…
The film will of course appeal a tad more to the male perspective, but honestly when you look beyond Seth Rogan’s ever intentionally placed molotov of druggery and mazel tovly awesome beard, and the strangely balding J G Levitt and their mysterious drug dealer associate, we remember that we all go through the same things, regardless of our individual attitudes, perspectives and the colors they take on. A good “holy” season watch when your bored and want some entertainment. Seasons Greetings and keep your heat beating.
This has got to become a new Christmas tradition..
Amongst a busy year of blockbusters and dramas there have been very few good comedies that have made me laugh out loud, when i found out about a Christmas movie starring Seth Rogen, one of my all time favourites paired up with Joseph Gordon-Levit and Anthony Mackie.. well i thought, comedy of the year right? I didn’t think wrong, The Night Before is hilarious and among that i will be making it a new Christmas tradition as it also tells a very touching story about friendship and the meaning of Christmas.
The story follows Ethan, played by JGL, who’s parents died around Christmas time. His two best friends, Issac (Seth Rogen) and Chris (Anthony Mackie) make it a tradition to hang out every year. But as a result of them moving on with their lives that tradition will be coming to an end, with the biggest party in town “The Nutcracker Ball”. What was arguably most important with these characters was the fact that they had to have great chemistry, which they do. All 3 of the main characters are played very well and are all different. The film sort of sets itself up to be one that deals with the troubles that Ethan has to overcome when realising his friends have grown up. Whilst it does do this, the other characters both have to overcome troubles of their own which was interesting to see.
Among the madcap humour, like the fact that most of the movie deals with Seth Rogen on every drug you can imagine, the message we ultimately take from the film is such a good message and done surprisingly well. Also, i heard huge buzz coming from Michael Shannon’s role, and yes he steals this movie and makes all of his scenes so damn funny that you always look forward to seeing him on screen and some other great cameos really round it out to be a brilliant time. This is a film i could get on board with and watch every Christmas and im sure many others would too
A new Christmas tradition for sure and i highly recommend you see it before Star Wars completely dominates the box office.
