But Carla’s family is wealthy which permits her mother, already blinded to her daughter’s rather high-functioning abilities, to try and provide for Carla beyond her needs or desires, bringing forth the inevitable confrontations… for what Carla may lack in mental ability she certainly makes up for in her insistence on being independent, even to living in her own apartment. But if this isn’t enough, into the mix comes a young man, equally challenged mentally, who moves Carla beyond anyone’s control….
Plot: A mentally challenged girl proves herself to be every bit as capable as her “perfect” sister when she moves into an apartment and begins going to college.

Wonderful
The Other Sister was made in a wonderful way to learn about life of young love for the disabled or not. At first the trailer made me want to see the movie as soon as it opened at the movie theaters. I was not sure why the title was called “The Other Sister” until I read a review. I loved how all the characters meant to one another. The comedy and the tear-jerking made me understand how it is in life. The acting is performed greatly and I hope it will be mentioned in the year 2000 award nominations and winners.

Welcome to a Hollywood movie, where someone putting on a funny voice for over two hours and lurching a lot can pass as a disabled person. At least Dustin Hoffman was kind of convincing in Rain Man… here Juliette Lewis tries her best, but never convinced me she was doing anything less than an impersonation. Giovanni Ribisi does better as her also mentally challenged love interest, but really my main reaction to both was ‘why is everyone acting like they have special needs, when it’s so obviously fake’?

So anyway, this is a romantic comedy from the director of Pretty Woman and Runaway Bride so you could say he knows this territory well. What he’s done is taken the most basic formula of all: rich girl meets poor boy, they fall in love, her snooty mother disapproves, his stupidity causes a brief split but then GASP! Everything is resolved in the final reel, which includes a quick wedding, a marching band and the pompous mother ‘accepting’ both their impulsive marriage and one of her other child’s lesbian relationship. Bless!

Like I said, all very predictable and pretty boring. But then, they try ‘jazzing’ it up with the mental health angle… that’s where the writers go too far. Not only are the jokes aimed at Lewis’s unspecified condition quite offensive, they’re also never funny. We’re not looking at a character here, we’re looking at a collection of personality quirks designed to appear ‘cute’ to a mainstream audience who deserve better.

I’m all for people bemoaning a lot of the excessive political correctness and snowflakery that goes on these days… but when it comes to productions like this which try dressing up serious issues with a veneer of unrealistic cuddliness, I have to say the sensitive types might have a point.

Was it wrong to side with the ‘overprotective’ mum at the end, that this coupling might have serious problems later on which no amount of upbeat soundtrack songs and ‘motivational’ speeches can ignore? I don’t think so. 4/10
