Watch: The Return of Frank James 1940 123movies, Full Movie Online – Frank James, the brother of Jesse James, has been laying low, living as a farmer and taking care of Clem, the son of one of the members of the James gang. He gets word that Jesse was killed by Bob and Charlie Ford, he hoped that the law would deal with them but when he learns that the railroad man whom he and Jesse terrorized contracted them to kill Jesse and helped them get off, he goes after them. Clem whom he told to remain on the farm goes with him and when it’s impossible for him to do so, Frank has no choice to let him tag along. Now in order to cover their tracks they start telling people that Frank James is dead and that they saw it. Eleanor Stone, a female reporter, who wants to write about it interviews them and they are both taken with each other. But eventually she learns who Frank is from the Pinkerton detective who is tracking them but doesn’t turn them in. But eventually Frank learns that his farm hand, Pinky has been arrested as his accomplice and is about to be hung. Now short of knowing who Frank is, he has not done anything to help Frank, so Frank has to decide what is more important getting the Fords or helping Pinky..

A good western by the great Fritz Lang
“The Return of Frank James” has a nice script, beautiful costumes, an accurate photography in gorgeous technicolor. Perhaps a further pair of gun-fights would be desirable: gun-fights in a western movie are like salt in the food. The film has a peculiar interest for cinephiles, since here the great director Fritz Lang confronts himself with the western genre for the first time. I think he makes a good job, even if does not seem completely at his home. Moreover we have the usual Henry Fonda’s charisma and… OK… the main reason why I am interested in the movie is the presence of Gene Tierney at the very beginning of her career. I must confess that here her legendary beauty is still a bit unripe… let’s say that Venus has just come out of the shell. No fear: within one year or two our eyes will rest on the highest beauty in movie history (in history at all, I dare say).

A less than impressive sequel to “Jesse James”…
Fritz Lang directed this pallid western filmed in muted Technicolor and starring HENRY FONDA as Frank James, seeking to shoot down the man (JOHN CARRADINE) who shot his brother Jesse in the back.

It’s a tale of revenge, but not as dark a tale as you might expect, prettily photographed but lacking the grittiness one would expect from this sort of tale. Fonda makes a completely acceptable Frank James, but GENE TIERNEY is rather wasted in her film debut, decorative but given a thinly written role which she plays in a high-pitched, whining sort of voice. It’s no wonder she got the bad reviews she did early in her career. Nor were her looks as sharply defined as they were later on when her acting skills improved considerably.

While she underacts, the same can’t be said for any of the supporting players, all of whom are guilty of extravagant ham acting–especially in the long, drawn-out courtroom scene for the finale. Crotchety HENRY HULL is worst of all, LLOYD CORRIGAN (as Tierney’s father) not far behind, and J. EDWARD BROMBERG, EDDIE COLLINS, THURSTON HALL and DONALD COOK are all guilty of cringe-worthy overacting that just makes Fonda’s performance more refreshing for its naturalness. JACKIE COOPER too, gives a more even performance as Fonda’s sidekick.

Fritz Lang makes the most of the final suspenseful shoot-out in the shadows of a barn between Frank James and Bob Ford, but the film is hardly a distinguished western. In fact, it’s rather routine and one can only wish that someone like Henry Hathaway or Henry King had been assigned to direct this one.

A disappointment as a western and as a film debut for Tierney.
