Plot: Three college students on a road trip across the Southwest experience a detour – the tracking of a computer genius who has already hacked into MIT and exposed security faults. When the trio find themselves drawn to an eerily isolated area, suddenly everything goes dark. When one of the students regains consciousness, he finds himself in a waking nightmare.

Not what I was expecting – in a good way!
From the trailer I expected The Signal to be a sort of Blair Witch take on an alien encounter with some retro, creep-tastic Hazmat encounters. While there were certainly elements of that in the film, the actual storyline exceeded my expectations, as did the philosophical undercurrent to the film. This is a movie that explores the dichotomy of human nature, specifically the war between logic and reason, and emotion. These characters are fighting themselves as much as they are extrinsic factors. Kudos to the Brenton Thwaites (an actor I’d never heard of before now) for keeping me emotionally and mentally engaged throughout the movie and holding his own against the filmic might of Laurence Fishburne.
In short, this felt a bit like Dark City meets Signs, and I really enjoyed the weird twists and turns in a narrative I fully expected to be formulaic and predictable.
Has Some Intrigue But Too Many Questions Remain Unanswered
Although this film has some intrigue and interesting concepts, I felt it was way too ambiguous and left too many questions unanswered.
Nic (Brenton Twaites), his girlfriend Haley (Olivia Cooke), and their best friend Jonah (Beau Knapp) are traveling by car cross country, to California, to help Haley relocate. Nic and Jonah are computer experts, who had their personal records violated at MIT by the hacker NOMAD, who also infiltrated the main servers at their university.
Now, as they stop at a motel out West, NOMAD is still hacking their computers and phones and taunting them. Nic and Jonah, using their computer skills, locate where the NOMAD signal is coming from, and decide to pay a surprise visit to the Nevada location.
However, they discover the location is a small trailer in a very remote part of the Nevadan desert. As Nic and Jonah investigate the cabin they hear screams from Haley, who had remained in the car, and they rush to try and help her.
Nic, though, ends up blacking out and awakens in a subterranean medical research facility, led by Dr. Wallace Damon, ably portrayed by the veteran actor Laurence Fishburne. Dr. Damon is in full Haz-Mat protective gear and tells Nic that he’s been exposed to very contagious elements by aliens.
Without getting into too many spoilers, let’s just say a long series of strange happenings will occur that offer up some intrigue, but never really deliver a coherent explanation of it all, and leave too many unanswered questions. The ending was way too cryptic, as well, and just added to the ambiguity.
