Ray has a side scheme going too, taking kickbacks on the love hotel project whose construction he’s managing. The suburban Aussie marrieds live across a river from each other, the much older, domesticated Ray in an upper middle-class neighborhood, Carla on the wrong side of the water. The cheaters will lure their families to the same Christmas picnic celebration, to provide alibis while still being able to sneak off and chat about the arson. Carla’s tow-truck owner hubby, Smithy, is a fearsome tough to cross, so will the philanderers’ holiday gifts come through, or explode in their lying faces?
Plot: Ray, a construction worker trapped in an unhappy marriage, pursues an affair with his neighbor, Carla. Carla’s husband, Greg, is a mobster who keeps large sums of drug money in their home. With this in mind, Carla comes up with a plan: She and Ray will steal Greg’s money, burn down her house, convince Greg the money was lost in the fire and then run away together. Carla’s scheme, however, doesn’t go off as planned.

The best plans by laid men
I really enjoyed this overlooked Aussie flick because it less than predictably shows you that no matter how carefully you plan something and whittle it down to it’s simplest form, the universe is chaotic and the butterfly effect can put the screws to your carefully built house of card. And yes, the whole plot here is a house of cards with one lie covering up another and another until the two characters spiral downwards into a chasm of self destruction and loss of control. For our two cheating main characters, it gets a little Kafkaesque as the circle of poison and snowballing of deceit begins to collapse in on itself and destroys everyone around them. This story has been done before but I thought The Square did a good job of telling it from yet another angle.
Mind Achingly Bad Film Making
Oh my goodness you have never seen a film asking you to believe so much insane nonsense in all your life. Claire van der Bloom is gorgeous as always but the motives for her actions are non-existent. First off why would she want to have a relationship with someone old enough to be her father that has a perpetual look on his face like he’s smelling a dirty diaper. Daved Roberts in an absolutely selfish, petty and ugly character. You will wish awful things to happen to him because he deserves it. Apparently every couple in Australia is unfaithful and treats the significant other in their relationship like garbage. It seems to be normal and taken for granted. Not one person is this movie acts in a fashion that is remotely acceptable or believable from beginning to end. Not even close. One absurd scene after another. Some gritty editing is a plus, and the acting is competent but just barely. The cast is simply not given anything to work with and are left to kind of flouder around with the flimsiest of motives for their actions. I give a 3.5 but rounded down as usual because I feel some compensating needs to be done for the ever present inexplicable 9’s and 10’s that always accompany the worst of movies. What could have been a sick, dark and pleasantly enjoyable movie is left you cringing and rolling your eyes at the ludicruousness of every turn. Horrible people doing stupid things. It gets worse and worse until you’re practically screaming at the screen for them to smarten up. But they don’t, and the movie deteriorates and crumbles before it hits the one hour mark. Pathetic, really. Find something with Miranda Otto in it if you want to sample more Aussie fare. She’s adorable, charming, and almost always gets herself involved in worthy and captivating roles/films. Films where dishonesty and betrayal do not take the forefront. This is one of the worst piles of rubbish you will endure, with superficial subplots that add no value or insight to anything. I can’t stress enough how annoying David Robert’s clueless deer in headlights behavior starts to get under the skin. If you go in knowing this you might enjoy a clinic on lousy movie making.
