The Teller and the Truth is the story of Francis Wetherbee, a beautiful, young bank teller who disappeared in 1974 after her car was found submerged in a river. Filmmaker Andrew Shapter (Before the Music Dies, Happiness Is) follows the forty-year-old cold case that sparked the imagination of her hometown of Smithville, Texas, and beyond. Did she drown? Commit suicide? Was she kidnapped? Or is there another answer? Shapter combines a documentary style with a classic narrative interpretation in order to separate myth from truth about Francis. Various theories and conjectures are weighed against the “facts” as they are revealed in old photographs, authentic footage from home movies, and actual Vietnam-era rare (and never before seen) historical footage. As new evidence is discovered, the film transforms into a narrative, as her words-which reveal the truth–come to life. A small-town mystery now becomes a global search for a woman who may still be alive..
Plot: In 1974, 24 year-old Francis Wetherbee, a bank teller who is the subject of small-town envy and gossip, disappears from her hometown of Smithville, Texas two weeks after her fiance’s bank is robbed. Her car is dredged from the bottom of a local river but it yields no clues. After a vigorous but futile search for the missing woman, the authorities give up, and Francis recedes into legend–until the case is revisited nearly 40 years later when key figures in her life come forward with theories and clues surrounding her disappearance. The film then morphs from documentary style to narrative as the odyssey of Francis’ life unfolds for the audience and the truth is revealed.

Glorifying Antisocial Act
Nicely composed score and beautifully filmed quasi documentary that basically glorifies an antisocial protagonist -Oliver who loved his dog the way Tony Soprano loved children and geese- and a histrionic partner who might have been a victim herself. The narrative does not express any remorse for people who suffered from this couple actions simply because they were conservative and short minded folks from a small town in Texas. This narrative is single minded, too romanticized, and somehow ignorant. I could not believe that we had to watch 40 minutes of this soap opera to realize the. director’s fantasies of creating a hallow version of Bonny and Clyde.

As the other reviewer mentioned, the film narrative is a mess and montage is a disaster. I liked the music and cinematography, so 4 stars for that.
