Fantastic movie with great cast and a thrilling story. Bogart performs great.
I wanted something very special to be my 5,000th film (at least to my horrible memory and to my stats on IMDb), and so after brazen and intense thought, I decided on a later-than-expected watch of a classic from Bogart’s association with John Huston. I say later than expected because I bought the immaculate 24-film Humphrey Bogart Collection, which was supposed to have it on its 12 double-sided DVDs, but it accidentally had, in its place, the special features disc, which held excellent feature-length documentaries on both John Huston and the making of the film. Thus I waited until recently, when I found the blu for a very good price and went for it.
It was worth the wait. The ultimate tale of sordid greed. Without going into detail or spoilers, everyone got exactly what they deserved. My only qualm is that after a splendid cameo by the director (whom when I think of that aspect of his career, I will always fondly think of ‘Chinatown’), I was hoping we’d end up seeing more of his character. That would have been even more wonderful for me.
Hopefully I will see and rate another 5,000–and I’m very curious if and when I do, what film I’ll choose for THAT milestone…
Bogart n Huston nailed it. One of my fav movie of all time, depicting human nature in an interesting way.
I first saw this in the early 90s. Revisited it recently on a blu-ray. Treasure of the Sierra Madre is one of my favourite n in my opinion Bogart’s best acting display. Searching for gold has always been a popular film topic n this film has really nailed it with superb display of human nature. Bogart is phenomenal in this film. In this film he is so full of paranoia, insanity n evil but u still feel pity for him. His grungy, unkempt n unshaven look added to the character. The film has a dark tone dealing with human nature of greed, paranoia, evil intentions, insanity n ignorance but it has its share of laughs. Walter Huston’s happy dance, Bogart’s evil smile, Holt showing equanimity in adversity n Alfonso Bedoyas ignorant n illiterate attitude. The scene, where the character of Holt wondering whether to help his fellow colleague trapped inside the mine n his sympathy towards the widow’s share of gold as well his infatuation with the widow by jus looking at the photo r all dealt very well in the film. The scene where the three characters are ready to kill the fourth one is indeed man’s darkest nature.
A remake is needed with more focus on the action n adventure.
Let me start by saying that this is easily one of the top 5 pre-1950 films in existence. No doubt about that in my mind. Not only that, but it is easily one of the greatest films ever made after 1950 as well.
To me, this film in the end plays as a dark comedy. A dark comedy that pokes it’s fun at the greedy devil within the minds of men.
The thing that stands out to me the most about this film is the writing. The Oscar winning screenplay is in my view still under-appreciated. This film’s writing is totally devoid of any prejudice at all, and has a depth that almost every other film can only dream to have. A truly amazing work.
I could go on and on about this film, but I will just end by saying that as a story, and as a film, The Treasure Of Sierra Madre will stand as an artistic landmark for all of human history.
