A hugely enjoyable blaxploitation blast
How’s this for a gloriously wild and ludicrous premise: Rich evil white supremacist Monroe Feather (a perfectly slimy portrayal by Jay Robinson) plans on killing the entire black population in America by dumping a lethal serum into the water supply of three major cities. It’s up to three rough’n’tumble macho black super warriors — music executive Jimmy Lait (big, bad Jim Brown), private eye Jagger Daniels (the ever cool Fred Williamson), and ace martial artist Mister Keyes (an extremely amiable Jim Kelly) — to stop Feather before it’s too late. Director Gordon Parks Jr., working from a divinely absurd script by Eric Bercovici and Jerrold L. Ludwig, relates the wacky story at a snappy pace, loads the flick with plenty of right-on hip attitude, and stages the copious thrilling action scenes with considerable muscular élan (the shoot-outs and chopsocky fights both totally smoke while the boffo climactic raid on Feather’s headquarters is a rousing doozy). It’s a real treat to see the mighty trinity of blaxploitation icons Brown, Kelly, and Williamson galvanize the screen with their swaggering charisma and larger-than-life personalities. Moreover, a bunch of familiar 70’s drive-in faces pop up in cool minor parts: Alex Rocco as the ineffectual Lt. Di Nisco, Charles MacGregor (Fat Freddie in “Superfly”) as the helpful Charley, Roberta Collins as Lait’s secretary, and even “Playboy” Playmate Jeannie Bell as a hot chick. The foxy Sheila Frazier looks really fine as Lait’s main squeeze Wendy Kane. We even get some yummy gratuitous female nudity courtesy of three fierce, yet sexy motorcycles mamas who torture one of Feather’s goons. Lucien Ballard’s crisp cinematography makes nifty occasional use of freeze frames and strenuous slow motion. Both Richard Tufo’s funky score and the soulful R&B soundtrack hit the groovy spot (the theme song in particular is a total pip). Essential viewing for 70’s grindhouse cinema aficionados.
