A work of art
From the very beginning of the film, the theme is set beautifully. There is a theme of flowing lines in the film, right down to the chalk. And as you watch the movie it is truly like watching a sequence of brush strokes coming together to make a beautiful piece of art. The young actors/actress do such incredible work, it is breathtaking to see such a sincere, moving and convincing performance from all of them. The cinematography is also beautiful, finding flashes of beauty in bleak settings.

The writing and directing deserve special attention as well. The complex material of the movie sits on a razors edge, on side it would too much fairy tale on the other side too dark. Issa Lopez is more than up for this challenge. She weaves a dark fairy tale that absorbs the viewer into the complexity. She weaves sorrow, joy, death and life into a masterwork tapestry.

At one point, I was so absorbed in a particular scene that it took me a moment to realize I was crying. I would recommend watching this film uninterrupted.

Offbeat, Imaginative, and Deep
Golden carp swimming in a small pool of rainwater on the cement floor of an abandoned home, windows lit from inside homes along the city backstreets at night, orphaned kids sleeping on the street, and a girl alone waiting for her mom who will never return.

We forget who we are when violence and abuse ensnare us. Over 200,000 people have died or disappeared in Mexico since 2006. Entire city areas become ghost towns. Statistics are not kept for children, so an unknown number disappear every year. Tigers Are Not Afraid follows a group of children who are trying to break the spell of this violence. One among them, Estrella, is granted three wishes. The wishes come true, but something bad happens with each wish that she does not intend. Be careful what you wish for.

This offbeat, imaginative, and Guillermo del Toro recommended film took me to a different world in many wonderful ways. It is well-written, ingeniously structured, and delightfully deep. A childlike wonder pervades the entire story, like with a Terry Gilliam film. Ambient sounds of barking dogs, chirping crickets, and distant sirens complement the eerie images. The child actors do remarkably well and, as the theme of the story also suggests, teach us that to get through all the bad stuff and come out on the other side, we have to remember we are tigers inside.

“Vuelven” is the title in Spanish, which means something like “come back.” Tigers Are Not Afraid is streaming on many channels.
