When she dies of asthma Nigel is left with a distant father but worse is to come when the ‘common’ Mrs. Joan Potter arrives as the Slaters’ cleaner. Nigel fears, rightly, that her aim is to be the next Mrs. Slater and soon he has a new stepmother and is whisked away to the country. Joan is, however, a superb cook but this only makes for rivalry as Nigel, the only boy in his cookery class at secondary school, competes with her to find the way to his father’s heart. A weekend job in a pub kitchen introduces Nigel to an older boy, another great cook and gay like himself, who gives him the confidence and inspiration to leave home after his father’s death and head for the hotel kitchens of London.
Plot: An adaptation of celebrity chef Nigel Slater’s bestselling memoir, ‘Toast’ is the ultimate nostalgic trip through everything edible in 1960’s Britain. Nigel’s mother was always a poor cook, but her chronic asthma and addiction to all things canned does not help.

Interesting… but anticlimactic.
The casting choices were very good in my opinion; very individual characters who you really feel as if you get to know. Freddie Highmore came in too late unfortunately. The sudden switch lost my sense of attachment to Nigel, and it was too near to the end to have it rebuild. I loved Oscar Kennedy. I thought he was amazing.
The ending was such a letdown, I was still waiting for the ‘real ending’ when it happened. Nigel’s sexuality wasn’t really emphasized, nor was it not mentioned. It was just ‘there’. It wasn’t played into the plot line or Nigel’s character development. Probably the most anticlimactic bit after the ending.
Good. But could have been a lot better.
From someone who would have been the same age as Nigel when this is set.
Utter rubbish, from start to nearly the end (I gave up when Nigel started snogging the guy, no build up just straight in, seemingly pointless) For a start, the local stores I knew wouldn’t have stocked things such as spaghetti in the late 1960’s, not even in Wolverhampton, the height of exotic would have been a Vesta meal. As for Mrs S not being able to cook, no one at that time would have been that bad! My mother hated cooking and we didn’t have much money, but, we wouldn’t have lived on toast and what was the point of all the veg in the garden if she wouldn’t cook and serve them.
As for the smoked haddock bit, was Nigel so thick that he didn’t think to turn the grill off when there was no sign of his Dad, that’s right kid, burn the house down! As for Home Economic classes, what school was that? Everyone cooked the same things in those days and started at aged 11, not 15 or 16 and we certainly didn’t make the extravagant meals Nigel brought home, again, total fantasy.
It just didn’t feel right, the acting was fine, but, like when the Supersizers did the 1970’s and 1980’s it felt like they hadn’t bothered really researching or asking what the everyday food was like and went for clichés.
I know at the start it has a disclaimer, but, basic facts about the time were completely wrong and it really was a work of fiction trying to pass itself off as history of a kind. Disappointing.
