And This Was Who’s idea?
Phil Roman, the director of many Garfield cartoons, really messed up on this flop. I can’t believe it was released theatrically! Maybe we can blame this for all the other direct-to-video releases over the past few years. 1/5 stars. It was a really dumb cartoon movie, that I wouldn’t watch again even if it were free…
Maybe the critics should actually WATCH Tom and Jerry BEFORE commenting on the movie.
Now, I’ve been a Tom and Jerry fan for as long as I can remember. I’ve seen just about every major cartoon. I could probably tell you everything that happened if I was the bragging kind of person, which I am not, so I won’t.
I’ve seen the movie about 3 times now. At the time, I liked it a lot, and even now I still do. If anything, what angers me most about the movie is the criticism it received…criticism it didn’t deserve. There were two “major flaws” many people pointed out, and yet neither is new for Tom and Jerry.
The first “flaw” is the fact that they’re friends in the movie. So? This is hardly new. In several of the cartoons the cat and mouse duo were friends, sometimes right from the start. Of course, the classic ones were when they were NOT friends, but that’s not the point. Nor is the fact that they don’t start off as friends in the movie. And what’s more, they don’t even stay friends for several chunks…there’s always the odd skirmish.
But the second “flaw” really takes the biscuit for me…the fact that people complain because, in the movie, both Tom and Jerry speak. This is something, they claim, should never happen to them. I have a reply to this…they don’t know Tom and Jerry. I do, and I know for a fact that, despite what Tom and Jerry actually say in the movie, this is NOT the first time either/or has spoken. And although Tom’s voice is somewhat odd, and Jerry sounds like a girl (although you must remember, he is a mouse), they certainly have better voices than in the cartoons, where neither/or actually fitted. This is probably why they don’t speak much in the cartoons.
Nevertheless, the movie is enjoyable, and the songs are pretty good. Basically, after a fight resulting in the two getting left behind when Tom’s owners move away, Tom and Jerry find themselves stuck on the street. After several bickering moments, the two meet a dog and a flea who explain that they’re never going to survive out in the wilderness fighting. The two don’t want to, but after a run-in with a few alley cats, the two decide to give the friendship thing a shot. Not long after, they get caught up in the major adventure, namely helping a little girl find her lost father whilst avoiding the evil money-hungry Aunt Figg. She’s not very nice, believe me.
A good movie for true Tom and Jerry fans, and certainly not worthy of such lame criticism. Enjoy.
