Zany brilliance
A girl gets invited by a mysterious stranger to go to a store to get a unicorn. She’s wanted one her entire life despite the attempts by her zany parents to normalise her. Sound like a good plot? It’s not, but Brie Larson and Samuel L Jackson manage to pull this off and turn it into a sweet lovely film about life and dreams, and love and growing up. I think without Jackson and Larson this would have been a ridiculous film that no-one would like, but they made it work and I now forgive Larson for her searingly bad appearance in Kong.

Perfect wake and bake movie.
I watch a lot of movies and for my Sunday wake and bake movie I chose Unicorn Store. I chose it without knowing anything about it, the title just seemed something a stoner might like. So the whole story was a mystery to me, no clue what I was going to watch, no high expectations. It turned out to be one of those movies that brought a smile to my face for the entire movie. The ironic undertone on how to behave normally in society, on how to be ‘normal’, on how to become the perfect little sheep everybody wants you to be, was just great to watch, i absolutely loved it! The whole movie is in that same ironic ambiance, subtle but so visible for people who want to live a simpler life. As for the cast you couldn’t have found a better actress than Brie Larson to play Kit. After the series United States of Sara where she showed that she can be a funny actress, and her stunning performance in Room where a serious role is also something she just can handle she did a great job in Unicorn Store, a mixture of funny and serious. Mamoudou Athie on the other hand was maybe not the perfect guy to play Virgil, that could have been better. I see a lot of people hated this movie, I won’t even try to understand why, as the Unicorn Store is just not for everybody, it’s a movie for dreamers, and it’s also a movie that works perfectly after some good weed intake. A pleasant surprise to me, a movie I will watch again someday.
