I liked it anyway – for all the wrong reasons!

SYNOPSIS: As the U.S.O.S. Seaview, a mammoth glass-nosed atomic submarine designed by scientist Harriman Nelson, makes its trial run near the polar icecap, the Van Allen Belt of Radiation circling the globe suddenly bursts into flame and threatens to destroy the Earth. Nelson is convinced that the only hope for survival is to shoot a Polaris missile into the Belt and thereby cause it to explode backward into space. When the United Nations rejects his theory as being too dangerous, Nelson commandeers the Seaview and heads for the Marianas where he plans to launch the missile.
VIEWERS’ GUIDE: Despite its questionable morality (defiance of authority, anti-U.N. and pro-imperialistic sentiments), censors worldwide rated this movie as suitable for all. (Because of the influence of Protestantism, censors rarely paid heed to any moral questions aside from sexual and pacifist).
COMMENT: Proves my point that television has an insatiable appetite for the tantalizingly tepid, the screamingly superficial, the meretriciously melodramatic, the noisily numb-headed. You can well believe that this idiotic and nonsensical story with its plethora of cardboard cut-out characters spawned one of TV’s most successful series.
Still the special effects are fun and the movie has been produced on a grand scale. Not that the effects are convincing, mind — today’s computer kids will jeer at their obviousness — but their studio artificiality is part of their appeal. Who could resist all that rubbery vegetation and the familiar foam of that giant squid? Not to mention all the stereophonic explosions echoing from every amplifier in the theater?
