Westworld…Where nothing can possibly go worng!
Classic sci-fi thriller, written and directed by Michael Crichton, about a futuristic amusement park called Delos where people can role play in fantasy “worlds” based on the Old West, the Roman Empire, and Medieval Europe. Each of these worlds is inhabited by androids who look, talk, and act like real people. You want to have a sword fight with a knight, you can. You want to shoot it out with a gunslinger, you can. You want to bang an attractive prostitute or wench, have right at it. But this fantasy world turns into a nightmare when the robots malfunction and start killing the tourists!

Richard Benjamin does a great job as the unlikely hero, a newly-divorced and somewhat nerdy man brought to the park by his macho friend James Brolin. Dick Van Patten and Alan Oppenehimer are good in supporting roles. But it’s Yul Brynner, as the black-clad gunfighter out to kill Benjamin, that steals the show with his commanding screen presence. The movie takes its time setting things up and building the suspense, showing one small malfunction at a time. It’s an hour in before the killing starts. From that point on the pace never slows down and it becomes an exciting cat-and-mouse chase with Brynner hunting Benjamin. The sets and special effects are terrific, particularly when you consider this was made for $1.25 million (with half of that going to pay the cast and crew). I can’t say enough good things about Fred Karlin’s effective score. This was Crichton’s first theatrical directorial effort (he directed a TV movie prior to this). I think it’s his best work as a director, although I hold a special place in my heart for Runaway. His script is smart with nice bits of humor throughout. It’s a great film that should appeal to a wide variety of people, so long as they are able to enjoy movies made before CGI. Sadly, there are many who can’t.

Gripping sci-fi
Set in a very near future where the Delos amusement park offers guests the ultimate immersive experience things are about to go wrong. Guests stay in one of three themed areas; Roman World, Medieval World and Western World where robots serve their needs. In these areas they can enjoy the thrill of violent action without any real risk to themselves thanks to the hi-tech systems. We follow Peter Martin and John Blane as they head to Western World. Initially they have a great time; Peter guns down a robotic gunslinger, which it repaired to be shot again the next day, and both enjoy the company of the robotic women in the town’s brothel. Then things start to go wrong; first robots start declining guests’ instructions then they actually get dangerous. While technicians work to solve the problems guests struggle to survive.

This sci-fi film is now rightly considered a classic. While we see several characters there are only really two main characters; Peter and John, whose very names give them an everyman feel. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin are solid in these roles but it is Yul Brynner’s excellent performance as ‘The Gunslinger’ that is the most memorable. He moves in a way that is almost, but not quite natural and exudes a sense of emotionless menace when things go wrong. While most of the story is set in Western World we are also shown events in Medieval World and various behind the scenes events.

The story is told in a good way; if one didn’t know what was going to happen the pre-failure events could be seen as rather fun and occasionally comedic; only the constant reassurance that everything is safe makes one suspect that ultimately it won’t be. There are a few plot holes; the safety system sounds good but neglects the possibility of real bullets ricocheting and it seems unlikely that anybody would design an air-tight control room with only computer controlled doors… still these are fairly minor quibbles as explaining too many details wastes time and the latter issue served to add tension. Overall I’d definitely recommend this to sci-fi fans.
