Captain Fred and his Yellow Submarine recruit The Beatles to help save Pepperland. Along the way, they fall through the Sea of Time, Sea of Nothing, Sea of Holes and more. They meet Jeremy Hillary Boob Ph.D. and take him with them along the adventure. When at Pepperland, the Beatles “rally the land to rebellion” and take down the Blue Meanies, the four-headed Meanie dog and the Dreadful Flying Glove (with the songs “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band”, “With A Little Help From My Friends”, “Hey Bulldog”, “All You Need is Love”). In the end, we see all four live-action Beatles singing “All Together Now”.
Plot: The Blue Meanies take over Pepperland, draining it of all its color and music, firing anti-music missiles, bonking people with green apples, and turning the inhabitants to stone by way of the pointed finger of a giant blue glove. As the only survivor, the Lord Admiral escapes in the yellow submarine and goes to Liverpool to enlist the help of the Beatles.

Fantastic animated film
I consider myself fortunate to have seen “Yellow Submarine” in London right after its world premiere in July 1968. I was a young teenager at the time, and my father had brought my sister, brother, and me to Europe for our first visit. The picture was showing at a large cinema called the London Pavilion in the heart of Piccadilly Circus, and The Beatles themselves had attended the opening just a few days before. It was great to see this movie on a big screen with a good sound system. We loved the music and vivid colors. When we saw it again in Boston a few months later, we were angry that the “Hey Bulldog” number and a few other bits had been cut to reduce viewing time. I think the “Eleanor Rigby” number is best. The animated montage shown during the “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” number was partly taken from the 1933 Hollywood musical “Dancing Lady” and in 2006 I saw this old film on Turner Classic Movies, instantly bringing back memories of “Yellow Submarine.” The girl on the merry-go-round horse was none other than the leading actress Joan Crawford …. who was beautiful indeed in 1933, despite becoming a horror much later. No wonder John Lennon’s character in the cartoon liked her so much in his psychedelic dream!
A Bonafide British Classic!
Yellow Submarine is an LSD trip without the need to take the drug in the first place. It’s one of the best films ever to come out of the 60s and one of the most mesmerising animated films of all time. It’s got The Beatles; their classic songs; and the animation has never been recaptured in another piece of work. It’s a unique time capsule from a simpler generation.
The story’s basically this: the Blue Meanies are hellbent on destroying PepperLand, and eradicating music altogether. However, one sailor, named ‘Young’ Fred, manages to escape the Meanies in a Yellow Submarine: a magical one that can fly and probably transcend time and space for all we know. And Fred must get the help of The Beatles, Paul, John, George and Ringo, to stop the Blue Meanies once and for all!
The story is simple, but the trip we’re taken on throughout the movie is exceptionally wonderful. It’s oozing with Beatles joy and nostalgia. To put it simply this film is pretty damn flawless.
P.S. I’m glad that CGI motion-captured remake never got to see the light of day. It would have ruined the memory of this film.
