The death of his heir aboard R.M.S. Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens), a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his Lordship’s domineering, conservative mother, the dowager countess. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwhile, the butler presides over a staff which serves the family, but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants’ quarters, intriguing amongst themselves. Plot: A chronicle of the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era—with great events in history having an effect on their lives and on the British social hierarchy.

Completely captivating
I was hooked after the first five minutes and come heaven, hell or high water, I was going to see Downton Abbey twice, the second time to pick up the points which I knew would be too fast, and possibly convoluted, to follow the first time round. I have watched Masterpiece since the inaugural with Alistair Cooke, and I can’t remember anything as engaging and entertaining as this. As a cousin of an English family with deep affection for the monarchy and respect for the aristocracy, my perspective is an odd mix of Democratic ideals, old-time Republican values and curiosity about and appreciation of the social structure which prevailed so long in England. Downton Abbey appears to present a very balanced depiction of the social, political, economic and historical forces which drove the lives and fortunes of the classes and produced strange and almost incomprehensible behavior to comply with an unwritten, all-pervasive code. I am completely fascinated by the events and reactions and what would appear to be almost puppet-like behavior on occasion. I pray for a sequel.
Bring on more Shirley MacLaine!!!!
I started watching this in 2013 because I was told of the entrance of Shirley MacLaine, the fabulous American actress. I remember Shirley in the movie “The Yellow Rolls Royce”.Shirley was an absolute delight. The way she turned those stuffy Brits on their ears was sheer joy. She could out-dress them, out-think them, and gave better one-liners than they did. Maybe Martha could buy and sell them all 10,000 times over, but her character decided to not empty her Yankee piggy bank.
Robert is a wishy-washy aristocrat. Face it, Bobbo. Lots of Americans have aristocratic ancestors who lost titles and fortunes after wars killed their economies, and not just England. France had its revolution and annihilation of nobility and royals; Spain lost big in 1898/Spanish-American War. Russia had its revolution and execution of the royal family. Nobles were now despised. Robert is not the only aristocrat who was the victim of bad investments in lost causes that evaporated after a country regrouped and reinvented itself after a war and economic collapse. Robert, don’t miss a spot when you mop those floors.
Did I read that this era was “Edwardian”? This is wrong, IMO. King Edward ruled from 1901 until ca. 1910, before Titanic. King George V then ruled England until ca. 1936. (Edward was the son of Queen Victoria, who died in 1901).
I will comment on some downstairs denizens. Mrs. Hughes is nice. Daisy is shrewd. Mrs. Patmore is clever. Jimmy plays piano well. Carson needs humanized. I was sorry for Mrs. Hughes during cancer scare. Ethel is sweet. Shirley/Martha’s assistant was cheeky.
P.S. Disclaimer: I am a new viewer, and may not have all the facts straight, dates, personages, etc. I have a history degree, and am trying to follow this series based on outside world events during that time period.
P.P.S. March 2014 update: Shirley MacLaine should be a regular on this show. Her breath of fresh air needs to shake up those stuffy/pouty Brits way more often. Lady Edith is growing more mature. I saw Lady Sybil (actress) in “Winter’s Tale”, looking very lovely, as always. I enjoy the cars and women’s fashions changing as time passes on this show. Lady Rose is becoming a favorite of mine. She is so daring. I recently saw Maggie Smith in a movie from when she was very young — I also remember her from the Harry Potter series.
