Reviews:

Get off your high horses, this is reality
If you are looking for the next glamorous Sex and the City show, this is not it. In fact, it is the opposite. ‘Girls’ doesn’t advertise glamour in any way, which is a complete deviation from the average American show. It is odd how much controversy surrounds Lena Dunham and her ‘Girls’, because she actually writes a common scenario in a very familiar way. On paper, it is quite a lot like ‘Sex and the City’: four women from NYC who struggle with acquiring their careers and finding love. However, there are no Manolo Blahniks or Mr Bigs. There are crummy apartments and player boyfriends.

Life after college is nowhere near glamorous, and Dunham knows this all too well. If you find yourself at that little lost place, post graduation, taking any job that comes along your way and despairing over the fact that you might never get that career you’ve always dreamt of, or keep ending up in a less-than-perfect relationship because you are willing to pick up any love you can get, these ‘Girls’ might be some comfort for you. If you are in the mood for some real-life drama that is not sugarcoated in any way, this show might find you intrigued. And if you are still convinced this show is fake and its characters are unrelatable, at least watch it for Jemima Kirke, TV’s very own too-cool-for-you bohemian hipster. She’s the it-girl you don’t want to miss.

Seasons 1 & 2; experimental jetset, trash and… 7 stars, no less.
I don’t remember how I ended up checking this out, but I’m fairly glad I did. I can understand both the praises and the critiques, but my overall appreciation remains positive at the end of season two.

Sure, the characters can be exhausting in their bad-decision-making (if at all they make decisions and not just swing with their mood) or their machine-gun-like rattling of their lines, but something likable or moving always emerges from the wreckage that is produced – though the ending of season two is overly sentimental and positive to my taste.

One can argue that there is quite a lot of exceptional stuff going on, which will have one doubt the realism of it all, yet on the other hand, this milieu of struggling, but relatively well-off New York white girls is really not mine. For what they are, I enjoyed these at times awkward portrayals, or perhaps, concoctions – since when does it all have to be truth and nothing but?

The acting made it all the more fun. A lot of people really can’t stand Hannah Horvath, her selfish personality, her constant nudity or even her choice of clothing, and I couldn’t say that I love her, but there is enough wit and humor to her character to sustain the experience. When in season two she gradually seems to completely relapse into her high school state of OCD, it becomes clear she was already starting to unravel at the start of season one. And of course, there are the supporting roles, of which Adam’s and Marnie’s I found to be the most interesting and impressive, closely followed by Shoshanna’s, Ray’s and Jessa’s. Oddballs of flesh and blood, I would say, in no disrespectful way.

As far as a cohesive plot goes: it should be pretty hard to take the lives of a couple early twenty-girls and make it all logical and sensible, so I guess it’s as cohesive as it gets. The writing of the dialogues is pretty good, though (being an almost forty year old male) I had a hard time wrapping my head around all of it a lot of time.

Having finished two seasons and being forced to wait a considerable while for season three, I must admit I’m not in a ‘I can’t wait, I can’t wait’-state of mind, but I’ll look forward to it nonetheless.

7 out of 10 for 1 & 2.
