Very well made and acted Victorian era set Canadian crime series.
‘Murdoch Mysteries’ stars Yannick Bisson as Inspector William Murdoch who solves crimes in 1890’s Toronto, is an exceptionally well made and acted series, which makes a nice change from CSI/NCIS etc. staple of whiz-bang, FX laden crime shows
Bisson is likable as the handsome Inspector, with English Actor Thomas Craig suitably sceptical and at times dopey as his by-the-book boss and Johnny Craig is good as his rather naive partner and at times hindrance Constable Crabtree.
Helene Joy is suitably understated as the resident Doctor/Pathologist.
Now in its Third series, currently being shown on UK Cable channel ALIBI, (It surely deserves a wider audience on a Major British Channel)
The writing, set design and Photography is exquisite and convincing
Fans of well made and intelligent Mystery Series will find much enjoyment in Inspector Murdoch’s cases.
Starts off good, becomes great, then gets really terrible
I started watching Murdoch mysteries after I watched Miss Fisher and then Dr Blake. I started watching in 2015- binged until I caught up. To be honest Dr Blake and Murdoch were to ‘fill the void’ left by Miss Fisher, as I think Miss Fisher is better than Murdoch and Blake.
Anyways, I wanted to give Murdoch a chance because I enjoy Victorian period pieces, like mysteries, and it seemed fun. For the first 3 seasons it is fun- George is adorable! Murdoch is clever! Julia is progressive! Brakenreid is tough but lovable! Then season 4 comes around and it’s the first hint of the show weakening- but it’s not enough to make you quit. There is just a drop in the episode cleverness and the storylines seem to be boring. Season 5 picks up and I’d say 5-8 are pretty solid. Season 9 is when the episodes dip again in quality but the show still had me because the characters. Personally I’d say 12 is the start of the steady decline as they ran out of ideas. At some point Murdoch stops inventing gadgets and no longer has flashback sequences- both elements made the show fun. Julia goes from progressive to in your face ultra progressive where you just can’t enjoy her character anymore. George eventually stops with his theories and loses some of his charm , and from season 10 onwards has reduced episode counts. And Brakenried- it’s as if his character is bi-polar is he just a genuine jerk or is he just showing his toughness because he cares?
I think they should have ended the show by now, as it gets more and more boring each season that passes. I continue to watch because I’ve come this far- but if I had to start watching it now as of 2022 from episode 1, I’d pass on the show and not waste my time.
In a certian way the early episodes are kind of sad, as they prove the show was initially good, and a reminder of how poor in quality the show has become.
