The sharks always looked solid, which is an important thing that shark movies often fail at. But still real bad and pretty uncomfortable to watch.
_Final rating:★½: – Boring/disappointing. Avoid where possible._
Open Water 3 is low on all departments, and two of the main ones that affect viewing experience are the characters and the number of thrilling sequences. While I loved the attempt to add some drama between the characters and the use of night vision somewhere during the 80-minute running time, I did not enjoy watching it. The characters are repulsive, which gave me an idea that maybe the director did not care enough to make this an entertaining/serious movie about the perils of going near sharks. The weakest in the franchise. (Grade D). TN.
Dislikable characters in a cheap story ruin the fun.
I’ve seen a fair share of shark movies(about a dozen), and decided to give this one a chance despite the low ratings. Making a good shark movie isn’t easy, and the same goes for found footage films. So with this in mind I did not expect too much of it and just hoped for some good shark footage and maybe some nice shark attack aftermath images.
Without spoiling what happens, there will be sharks! Yes! And they look real and credible. Any use of cgi looks pretty good, no obvious rubber or pixelated sharks. This is the best part of the film.
Sadly the rest of the movie is filled with a really bad plot carried out by 3 unlikable selfish characters. The acting isn’t awful, but the story and dialogue are. And it doesn’t compliment their dull characters.
Maybe the director should make a “sharks only cut”. Because that’s all worth seeing.
A Must NOT See Movie (unless you have nothing better to do).
I have an Open Water Divers License and Graduated from the U.S. Military’s Diver School. We also trained with the “Aussies” at the Great Barrier Reef. “Back Floating” so that you do not have to kick or move your arms (to attract sharks). Since they had dive masks, they could also do the “jelly fish”, most sharks can identify this shape as very painful, if you fail you will die so quick and less painfully.
Sharks can smell human feces and urine for miles.
Ever heard of Basic Water Safety of “drown proofing”, the American Red Cross used to have free classes, so did many YMCAs, for Boy Scouts for the Swimming Merit Badge, Boating Merit Badge and before the 50 Miler Canoe Trip “Drown Proofing” was required.
This movie has the typical stereotype Panicked and Hysterical Person (Megan). that one of the brothers should have put a sleeper hold on to knock her out while in the life raft to render her less harmful.
Use of lights shined downward in a life raft, not very smart. Shining a light and illuminating somebody at night, also not very smart. Have not researched if sharks can see Infra Red (the active “Night Vision” on the video camera), most Video Cameras do have a small L.E.D. regular color white light, this could have been used to signal search aircraft before they found the inflatable life raft (as long as you keep the light pointed away from others and the water as to not attract the sharks).
Old Technology U.S. Military Reconnaissance Drones (RQs) and Armed Drones (MQs) have passive sensors that can detect the Thermal differences between near body heat desert, mountains, terrain, and an actual person. Current Technology Sensors can distinguish can illuminate black to turn into a reflective source (identification friend or foe, black tabs) like the current Generation of U.S. Military Night Vision Devices.
Most Commercial Boats are required to have Automatic Radio Transponder, that also sends an identification signal as to the Registration Information of the Boat, GPS location (within a few meters).
The technology exists for everyone to be wearing a transponder/GPS beacon (transmits your GPS Location) the size of a pack of cigarettes (the inexpensive type) or the size of a “match box” (the expensive type), like used by Skiers or Hikers, that may get buried alive in an avalanche (as meters of snow, yet the signal is strong enough to penetrate).
Standard Technology worn by Divers, Regular Fishermen, Boaters as a Strobe Light, a Signal Mirror, a Whistle. Personally, I would not use the strobe light under these conditions, unless on a very long detachable cord strobe floating at least 25 to 50 meters away, kind of like what Spear Fisherman Divers use, shark eats strobe light cord detaches, there is no knot tied, end of cord is slipped into cuff of wetsuit, not looped around anything.
Jacques Cousteau proved and stated in his Documentaries why you NEVER wear a black Wetsuit, as to why his Wetsuits were black with yellow stripes (to look like a toxic or poisonous fish, that sharks know about, proof that sharks even though they supposedly only see gray tones can differentiate the different shades of grey accurately as different colors, never use red on a surfboard). Favorite food of Sharks are seals (not U.S. Navy S.E.A.L.s) that happen to have black skin.
Unrealistic, Red Phosphorous Flares, Magnesium Flares, Red Phosphorus Flares with a Parachute, Magnesium Flares with a Parachute do not behave that way, regardless of where manufactured, unless somebody poured gasoline on the inside floor of the life raft. Believable if flare bounced off plastic roof or went thru roof, and or fell to the plastic floor burnt a hole in the wet plastic floor and the flare sinks to the ocean floor. Most self inflatable life rafts use CO2 cartridges, CO2 smothers fire.
