Reviews:

Life is not about always winning the race…but more about how memorable your journey was and who remembers you when you are gone
I truly enjoy the old classic films and although the first 30 minutes of this film starts off a bit slower than I would have preferred director Victor Fleming certainly makes up for it with a classic tale of a young man’s spiritual and mature growth during the remaining 87 minutes.

The story features a young boy named Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) whose wealthy industrialist father Mr. Cheyne (Melvyn Douglas) spoils his young son with money and supplies his son with his own personal staff to allow Mr. Cheyne to focus on his business empire all the while his neglected son decides to take advantage of every situation. In many situations the young Harvey is bribing his way through life at such an early age in a way that most of us just could not fathom. The director has done a good job in showing us what can happen to a young man who is not receiving the proper guidance and little attention from his single parent.

So young Harvey who is sailing on the high waters and again neglected by his father is not playing fairly with some other youngsters when he accidentally falls off of his father’s ship and into the ocean without any life raft or rescue ring buoy. As he realizes he might drown a Portuguese sailor named Manuel (Spencer Tracy) scoops him out of the hands of death and brings him back on to a 20 man crew fishing vessel. Over the next few months at seas we see a very slow but gradual change in the way that the spoiled and bratty Harvey looks at life.

You see, Harvey first gets a hard backhander slap directly across the side of his face from the ship’s Captain Disko (Lionel Barrymore who is the great Uncle of current actress Drew Barrymore) for talking back to the captain inappropriately. Gradually as Harvey spends every waking moment on this smelly, slimy, wet fishing vessel with his savior Manuel as his only guide and conscious how he must behave amongst men of fishermen, Harvey has a transformation for the betterment of mankind. Harvey learns what team work, sacrifice, and hard work can do for a young man as he interacts with Manuel, Captain Disko and his son Dan (a 17 year old Mickey Rooney), and fellow seaman Long Jack (John Carradine) as they fish in the ocean and face the high seas and mother nature.

This film is not all about a happy ending but more about life’s hard lessons and reality that we can learn more about ourselves and who we really are by allowing others to show us the way, as our fathers and grandfathers, and mothers and grandmothers showed us. This is a memorable film not only for its time some 80 years ago, but the message this film still holds true today. “Life is not about who wins the race…but more about how memorable your journey was and who remembers you when you are gone.

A great portrayal of Kipling’s American adventure novel
“Captains Courageous” is the MGM 1937 classic film of Rudyard Kipling’s 1897 American novel of the same title. It’s the tale of a rich, spoiled kid coming of age after falling from an ocean liner and being rescued in the North Atlantic by a fisherman in a dory. Onboard the boat’s ship, “We’re Here,” young Harvey Cheyne is put in the crew by Captain Disko Troop. But he has a lot to learn in the three months before the ship returns to its home port of Gloucester, Massachusetts, full of its cod catch.

Spencer Tracy won the first of his two best actor Oscars as Manuel Fidello, the Portuguese hand who picked Harvey, his “little fish” out of the sea. His character was also the most influential in teaching the spoiled, self-centered boy about honesty, caring for others, and real work. I’m not sure, but I think I read the book in school in my early teens. Having watched the film again recently – after many years, it struck me how Freddie Bartholomew did such a splendid job of acting as Harvey. He was so convincing as a rich brat, that one couldn’t imagine anyone liking him or any adult not wanting to take him over one’s lap for a good paddling.

Bartholomew was 13 years old and small for his age when the movie was made. In Kipling’s book, the boy is 15. I think his performance was that good that he should have been nominated for an Oscar – probably as supporting actor. Jackie Cooper had been the first child star to be nominated for an Oscar for his starring role in the 1931 film, ‘Skippy.” He was just nine years old and held the record as the youngest Oscar nominee for more than 50 years.

This film had several superb performances, including Lionel Barrymore as Captain Disko Troop, John Carradine as Long Jack, Mickey Rooney as the captain’s son, Dan, and Melvyn Douglas in the short role of Mr. Cheyne. With some exterior and sailing scenes shot in ports and off the coast of Newfoundland and Massachusetts, this film is a realistic picture of the fishing trade and its life and hazards in the North Atlantic. The bait catching and prepping on ship, fish riggings for the dories, and other aspects of the lifestyle are first rate and appear as they must have come off the pages of Kipling’s novel.

The film has some significant changes from the story. It eliminated the complex cross-country train ride of Harvey and his father from San Diego to Boston. And, it has his father as a widower, when both of the boy’s parents were alive and went to pick him up at the end of the adventure in Gloucester, Mass. And, in the book, Manuel isn’t killed at sea but survives and is thanked by Harvey’s parents; and Captain Troop’s son, Dan, is hired by Mr. Cheyne to work on their yacht.

This is an adventurous, educational and interesting story that doesn’t lose its punch and entertainment after many years. If anything, it has an added touch of historical portrayal of another time and segment of New England life that was very prominent for nearly two centuries. Every family should show this movie to their children before they reach their teens.
